Tourism from Spain has surged since Malta joined the EU, growing by 180 per cent in the first quarter of this year over the same period last year to reach 7,772, Tourism Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco said.

Between 2004 and last year, tourist arrivals from Spain more than doubled to reach 44,551. The highest number of arrivals was registered in 2008, with 49,497.

Some 60,000 tourists from Spain were expected to arrive this year, Dr de Marco said at a press conference to announce that the ballet Carmen will be performed in Malta by the Teatres de la Generalitat Valenciana at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, on June 4.

The company is being brought to Malta by the Spanish Embassy to mark the country's EU Presidency. The proceeds from the show will be donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The ballet of Teatres de la Generalitat Valenciana is regarded as a unique artistic project. The 20 dancers have built a broad choreographic repertoire reflecting the international dance scene.
