Fireworks factory explosion victim dies

Outdoor St Catherine feast cancelled

John Abela, 62, of Zejtun, who was severely burnt in the fireworks factory explosion near Marsaxlokk on Monday, died today at Mater Dei Hospital.

Mr Abela had been in critical condition ever since the blast, which slightly injured another four persons. His right leg was amputated.

Known as Ganni s-sagristan, Mr Abela had been a popular figure in Zejtun. His son was among those who had been working in the fireworks factory when the explosion took place.

Żejtun archpriest Fr Eric Overend on Tuesday described him as a simple and calm person. "He was very active in the community and was sacristan for 40 years. The news of the explosion shocked me."

Another two fireworks enthusiasts died in February during an explosion at St Sebastian fireworks factory, near Qormi.

The outdoor festivities as part of the feast of St Catherine in Zejtun on June 20 have been cancelled.

What's wrong ? its your mentality that uses unfortunate accidents just to get some mileage for their arguments. Probably your something serious is banning fireworks, those same fireworks Ganni loved preparing. Just because you don't like them and not because people die. Before jumping to conclusions you should expect the conclusion of the enquiry that's ongoing to understand what may have went wrong or what may have caused this terrible accident.
Unfortunate accidents occur daily otherwise we should ban cars from our roads because they have caused the deaths of much more than fireworks ? Your argument is flawed only prejudice and no substance. Mentality like yours makes you believed that Ganni was somekind of fanatic when on the contrary Ganni was an honest hardworking man always ready to help others, his life was at the service of the community he lived in. Respect not only for his family but also his memory and for what he did throughout his life.
RIP Dear Ganni and may you enjoy Our Lord and St. Catherine you loved so much, although some seem to be annoyed by this fact

May our country be so blessed not to have any more of these accidents.

Indeed, as you say: may our country be blessed with more people like him, people who would be ready to give up their lives so that we would have fun and 'enjoy' the summer festas and forget all about the people who died so stupidly in order for the feasts to go on as they are. Long live tradition!
