The first exit polls of the British elections show a hung parliament with the Conservative Party winning 307 seats, Labour winning 255, the Liberals 59 and independents 29. The polls were issued as polling stations closed across the UK.
Parties need 326 votes to have a governing majority in the House of Commons, but observers said the performance of the Conservatives could be sufficient for party leader David Cameron to try forming a minority government.
The polls show a sharp drop in seats for Labour but the real surprise, should these polls prove accurate, would be for the Liberal-Democrats who had been expected to build on the 65 seats they had in the last legislature.
