A 32-year-old man who smuggled drugs into prison five years ago was yesterday jailed for three months after admitting to the charges.

Marvin Pavia, of Fgura admitted to smuggling heroin into the prison on January 12, 2005 and trafficking in the drug.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli took into consideration the fact that the accused had helped police in their investigations which lead to other arrests and the fact that he had a clean police record at the time he committed the crime.

The Magistrate said that because of this she was going to hand down a punishment below the minimum set by law and jail Mr Pavia for three months. The accused was also fined €700.

Police Inspector Nezren Grixti prosecuted.
