The Nationalist Party yesterday launched its mobile phone service, Ping, with partly leader Lawrence Gonzi making the first call on the network to his wife, Kate, who had stopped to talk to some people at the BOV Adventure Park in Ta' Qali.

Looking relaxed in an open-neck shirt, Dr Gonzi said this was another step in the area of communication for the party, which already owned a wide array of media.

Ping, he added, was also a source of income for the PN, allowing it to have the funds to enable it to spread its message.

Ping uses the Go platform and is offering calls between Ping numbers at 14 cents per minute and text messages starting from four cents.

Speaking during the launch, PN secretary general Paul Borg Olivier said mobile phones had become an essential service and were no longer a luxury.
