Australia's Neil Robertson saw off a fightback from England's Ali Carter to reach his first World Championship final with a 17-12 win at The Crucible yesterday.

The 28-year-old is the first man from outside Britain and Ireland to reach the final since 1983, when Canadian Cliff Thorburn lost to England's Steve Davis.

Robertson went into the fourth session with a 15-9 lead in the best of 33 frames semi-final, but lost the first two frames.

But the world number four held on to become the first Australian to reach the final since Eddie Charlton in 1975.

The left-hander is now eyeing the chance to become the first player from outside the British Isles to claim the title since Thorburn triumphed in 1980.

The 28-year-old faces either Scotland's Graeme Dott or England's Mark Selby in the final.

Dott, the 2006 champion, was leading 15-14 last night.
