Enemalta announces higher fuel prices
The price of leaded and lead replacement petrol goes up by 2c tomorrow, that of diesel 1c, Enemalta said.
The cost of gasoil for heating has gone up 5c.
It said the revision reflects the prices fetched by Enemalta for the latest shipments of imported fuel.

Dear Mr.Fenech,
When you want to work on statistics you have to see the whole picture and not just bits and pieces, it's true, the price of petrol in Malta might not be the most expensive in the Euro zone but definitely not the cheapest.
However you have to also compare the income vs the expenditures, I am confident that the average wage in Denmark is much more expensive when compared to the average income in Malta, not to mention the standard of living, the roads network state (ours have been compared to Zimbabwe by independent sources).
If you take the utilities tariffs locally and again when compared to our income they are ridiculously expensive, to add insult to injury we have no choice, no competition even though monopolies shouldn't exist in a European County.
Most businesses in Malta are struggling so the wages will probably never increase to appropriate levels yet the taxes and tariffs are constantly getting higher so we are loosing the balance fast, Malta is becoming uncompetitive especially in the tourism sector which is the main contributor to Malta's economy. The future for Malta as I see it will be similar to what Greece is experiencing!

No problem guys as long it's not the Labour Party...We need to do a bit of sacrifice...Kollox tridu b'xejn ma jistax ikun, stop whining ok...pls do not forget that at least we got chocolate from Switzerland and a variety of salted peanuts from all over the world at our mega supermarkets. Ok Labour used to subsidise plots to workers and give away apartments at a preferably interest rate imma that was ages ago. The thing I most remember is chocolate that tasted like soap, 'toothpaste' that tasted like chlorine and tuna from just ONE brand!...Guys do not forget the past ok...............I am sure Dr Gonzi & Co knows exactly what they are doing!!

So? These prices are comparatively very cheap when compared to foreign countries such as Denmark and Holland. The people commenting below me do not happen to know that it is high time that the number of cars on the street have to be reduced drastically. Our anscestors walked everywhere, but now everyone wants to be pampared. Can we continue to witness 3/4 of a car empty? Can we continue to live in this wretched car culture, especially i know a person who own 5 Beetles and 2 Land Rovers? Can we continue polluting our lungs and having children with asthma, obesity, cancer? Can we?!

For all those that confuse facts with hues and colours, Europe’s Energy Portal > prices> fuel prices; or from the link(http://www.energy.eu/#prices), will be best pleased to know that we are the 9th cheapest, in the EU 27 countries, as regard the cost of LF petrol at the pump. This information is in real time. I am assuming that the petrol in Malta is Eurosuper 95!
While from the Eurostat (http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/cache/ITY_PUBLIC/2-15122009-BP/EN/2-15122009-BP-EN.PDF) our GDP purchasing power is about 25% less than that of the EU27 average.
Another observation is that the highest price for petrol is at Denmark @ 1.49, which is 22% more expensive than that in Malta. So if one were to compare the percentages of GDP in pps to that of the fuel – is it outrageous to conclude that the petrol in Malta is the most expensive in the EU 27 countries!
JAFarrugia
May 4th 2010, 11:52
Having just driven across Europe in my car i can confirm that yes were cheaper than UK, France, Switzerland and Italy. However, and this is the most important part.
Do we get the same choice of quality fuel??? i don't see no super unleaded or super diesel, i also don't see a choice in petrol stations (BP/ESSO/AGIP etc etc) like you do in other EU countries, it's about time the monopoly of Enemalta finished and finally stopped being taken for a ride, literally.

R. Azzopardi
May 3rd 2010, 11:39
I'm not smiling and I'll tell you why. I was unlucky enought to work in the oil industry in the worst possible period (1997 - 2003) when oil prices hit rock bottom. Hence my job was always threatened. A week after I left the industry, due to being sick of the uncertainty, prices rocketed to $45 and kept climbing. My ex colleagues are the ones smiling not me :(

If the hedging was done at 80 dollars, then Enemalta is making a profit and the prices should at least stay the same. When are we going to see other fuel importers ? or is this monopoly for eternity!!!!!
Mr. Robert Jenkins
May 2nd 2010, 20:14
Really its not so much the 2c extra per ltr. but the problem arises is when we have to fork out more for the weekly shopping as everything else will follow suit due to the cost of transport. so petrol goes up and so does the inflation. This is just the icing on the cake things will get worse, Greece is seeing to europe's probems no doubt.. end of story.
Luca Pellegrino
May 2nd 2010, 20:13
Another increase of fuel price and people just complain without doing nothing. The government think that we are stupid. They just say that in Europe the price of the fuel is the same or higher without thinking that in all Europe the salaries are much higher.
We should all strike and go to work without cars of go to the headoffice of Enemalta and complain there.

Shame on this country. Shame on its management. Shame on the people who can't go beyond colours (i.e. blue & red). In civilised countries, the government would have had to resign already with all the things which are going on at the moment. Shame! Now a year, two years wil pass, then fuel prices will be reduced a bit, some financial "help" wil be promised, and the majority will be fooled again. Shame on you Malta.

Just in case you forgot, until January 2009, diesel prices were around the 1.15 euro mark. They were lowered by 25 cents per litre in January 2009. Nobody seems to remember that.
P.S. I don't like paying higher fuel prices either especially since I always owned gas guzzlers so please don't accuse me of being a hardcore nationalist who agrees with whatever price hike the government comes up with.

Keep in mind, the prices on the web page you have linked are average prices from all suppliers in that country.
i.e. the consumer in those countries can chose to get their petrol from the garrage selling it cheapest in the area, now this price difference may only be 3 or 4 cents per ltr, but at least you have choice.
This is not an option available to the maltese consumer who due to the monopoly must pay the same price at every petrol station on the islands. i.e. their is no consumer choice in Malta when it comes to fuel.

@James Aquilina,
Until very recently, I would have been inclined to agree with you however, I travelled overland for a few days in March / April and never paid less than 1.22 euro per litre for diesel. Blue diesel was in the region of 1.36 euro per litre (price in Malta was 0.98 per litre). Furthermore, my vehicle smoked more than usual on Italian diesel and engine performance was exactly the same as it is in Malta. A few years ago, I would notice an instant increase in performance when I filled my tank in Italy.

Enemalta have raised prices by less than 2%. Because of the recent increase in the price of oil, the surprising thing is that prices have not yet gone up further.
Since the beginning of March 2010, the average price of oil in US dollars has gone up from around US$77 to US$87: around13%. As an oil importing country, this is bad news, and we have to pay for the increase.
The Euro has weakened against the US$ from around 1.37 to 1.33: around 3%. As our currency is not the US Dollar, this is further bad news, and we have to pay for the increase.
Labour conspiracy theorists, would like us to believe that the Maltese government controls the world price of oil and exchange rates but they are losing this battle to people who bother to stop and think. People can easily check site such as these links to the BBC, and decide for themselves if they should blame the government for not being Kuwait.

So,
We're always compared to Cyprus ..
http://www.energy.eu/
According to the European Union, Malta pays €0.58 per litre for unleaded fuel, same as Cyprus. The only problem is
that while at Cyprus the cost of taxes and surcharges over the base price puts up the price to €1.08, here it's
€1.22 .. 110% tax..
So when it comes to cover one's back we're all "Cause countries similar to us (Cyprus) do like we do", but when it comes
to collecting taxes we're all "We're like the other big countries in the EU and have to follow"
