Arrangements are being made for President George Abela to be repatriated to Malta as soon as possible, the Department of Information said.
It said that a medical teleconference was held this morning Mater Dei Hospital between a team of medical experts from Mater Dei Hospital and the team caring for President Abela at the Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai.
The Maltese medical team spoke with President Abela directly, and also examined the results of the radiological investigations carried out after the accident.
President Abela fell and suffered a fracture of the transverse process of the L2 vertebra. This injury is associated with severe bruising and pain, and requires bed rest, immobilisation and pain relief.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, who is also in China, stood in for the President and opened the Malta stand at the Shanghai World Expo. He also visited the President in Hospital.
The Expo is expected to be visited by some 70 million people over the coming six months.
