Bird watchers find car windscreen smashed

A 50-kilo stone was used yesterday to smash the windscreen of a car rented by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter and parked by the roadside in Delimara as the group's members patrolled the area.

The incident took place in the early hours when two CABS teams, in the company of police officers from the Administrative Law Enforcement unit, were investigating reports of illegal hunting and trapping in the area. No one was injured.

CABS spokesman Axel Hirschfeld said: "We can only assume that this cowardly attack is an act of revenge on the part of bird poachers."

CABS bird guards on Wednesday recorded about 300 shots at birds of prey and turtle doves to the east of Delimara. Police units alerted by CABS arrested two alleged poachers.

The conservationists said yesterday they had filmed a poacher with a weapon in his hand and caught a quail trapper red-handed in the same area. The ALE is investigating both cases.

The attack on the vehicle being used as a patrol car by CABS is the latest in a series of violent acts against bird conservationists. At the beginning of last week, the rear window of a BirdLife Malta vehicle was shattered by a shotgun blast. Just a few days later, a foreign bird protection team was attacked and an Italian birdwatcher was knocked to the ground.

Near Mtaħleb, graffiti consisting of anti-German slogans and bird symbols were found, including the threat: "You Germans will pay for this".

CABS is a German conservation organisation present in Malta to monitor the spring hunting season.

If CABS existed only to eliminate illgeal hunting then I would be the first to accept them 'with open arms. However CABS & BLM are AGAINST ANY TYPE OF HUNTING LEGAL OR NOT.

Autumn hunting is a world wide actively practiced activity.
During spring for some reason or other, spring hunting takes place in at least 24 EU member states (from the EU-27 member states some states, derogate from the Bird Directive, on some condition or other, for example pest control, no other suitable alternative, and some allow hunting on mammals).

However, BLM keep on harping that hunting is allowed 'only in Malta'. I have had work mates who did not know that hunting takes place abroad, and when I showed them hunting magazines from other EU-member states, they were baffled to say the least. The way BLM depicts the hunting activity they believed that hunting takes place only in Malta.

These organisations do not even accept autumn hunting of turtle doves and quail since they constistently lobby for the banning of hunting during September. They also lobbied for a banning of the rabbit season.

They do not 'fight' for control but for bans.

Innocent tourists do not enter private land as though it was theirs, and are mostly found in St Paul's, Sliema, St Julians....and not on private land chassing hunters or stamping crops, and objecting to leave the land

Innocent tourists are not at all bothered with hunting, I have had many people asking to take photos of the 'cute' hunting dogs and of the traditionally built girna (sheltered small room made out of rubble) and the traditional dura (hunters hide made out of rubble). They stop and chat and seem intreged and curious of our way of life. They do not stop to redicule hunters and imply that they are uncivilised.

Innocent tourists have nothing to worry about.
Wanna be cops are being targeted, and although I am AGAINST VIOLENCE I can understand the reason.

I have bought:
1. Fields for €20,000
2. A Pick-up for €23,000
3. 2 dogs for €500 (each)
4. 2 Guns for €1450 each
5. Planted 500 olive trees costing me €4700 (€9.4 each)

If someone had spent €50,000 on a hobby that was guaranteed at the time of the election&referendum, he cannot be blamed for feeling frustrated.

Stop frustrating people and give what was promised

Sorry James. You very much surprise me, as an ex-cop, you have surmised that this act of vandalism has been carried out by hunters/hunter. I have also been trained to observe and I can see no evidence of said "stone" turning end over end.
