Synchronised fireworks spectacularly lit up the sky over Grand Harbour tonight as the Fireworks Festival got under way.

The show started at 9 p.m. but was interrupted for some 20 minutes at 10.10 p.m. because of small fire on one of the barges from where the fireworks were being let off. The Civil Protection vessel Garibaldi approached the barge and quickly put out the blaze using a water jet.

The show continues today at 9 p.m. with displays by Santa Marija Fireworks Factory, Mqabba, St. Mary Fireworks Factory, Mgarr, St. Bartholomew Fireworks Factory, Gharghur, St. Mary Fireworks Factory, Ghaxaq and a finale by Parente Fireworks (Italy).
