The Labour Party is hoping there would be separation but complete respect between the state and the church, leader Joseph Muscat said yesterday during a visit by Archbishop Paul Cremona at the PL’s headquarters.
The PL, he said, was not aspiring to be a party against the church, it believed in the Catholic religion as a fundamental part of what made the Maltese nation but it was also a party that was in favour of a wide spread of legislation to cater for the whole of society.
The PL’s insistence for a lay state and for separation, Dr Muscat said, should not be confused with anti clericalism.
Mgr Cremona was visiting the PL's headquarters as part of the May 1 celebrations.
