Heavy fire in the south, all quiet in the north

The Committee Against Bird Slaughter yesterday reported more than 300 shots in Delimara while the situation was all quiet in the north.

Despite a large police and conservationist presence, hunters on the Delimara peninsula fired over 300 shots at turtle doves and raptors, Cabs claimed.

The shots, they said, came mainly from the Ta' Lombardi valley and the Ta' Ngraw area to its rear and Cabs president Heinz Schwarze believed "several dozen" people were responsible. He said he witnessed the "massacre" from Tal-Munxar with one of his teams.

The committee said it documented the illegal shooting on video but did not manage to get footage of a poacher carrying a weapon.

Mr Schwarze claimed the shooters were aware they were under observation and hid behind walls and small clumps of trees.

According to bird guard Leonardo Petrelli from Catania, they had lookout posts equipped with mobile phones, or walkie-talkies, passing on the position of the Cabs teams and the police to the poachers in the valley.

"What we saw this morning was organised crime at its best," Mr Petrelli said.

Another Cabs team, deployed in the Selmun Palace area yesterday morning, reported all quiet in the north, apart from five shots.

Alternattiva Demokratika Żgħażagħ condemned the recent attacks on BirdLife members and Cabs activists.

First of all, you quite clearly stated, in capital letters no less, STRANGELY THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT MENTION THEIR CALLING THE POLICE OR OF THE POLICE BEING PRESENT.
Not just calling the police.
Also, why would they (CABS) call the police when the police were already there? It is you that is trying to twist facts in order to smear those doing the work (i.e. trying to prevent illegal hunting) that your group and the FKNK should be doing.

Also you say you condemn Illegal hunting, and the FKNK has stated it has a zero tolerance to it. But then you play down the fact that it is going on. You either condemn it, or you don't. Which is it?

It is interesting that you also accuse those trying to prevent the illegalities of a crime. What crime is this exactly? Please be clear in your accusations.

Come on Mark, as a leader of the second largest hunting organisation in Malta (how many members do you have again?) we expect more of you.

Despite a large police and conservationist presence,.....passing on the position of the Cabs teams and the police to the poachers in the valley.
Even stranger is how you have appeared to have missed these 2 references Mark. It seems in you haste to condemn those reporting on those hunting illegally, you haven't really read the article.
You have yet to speak out against those hunting illegally this spring. It is these people who are the biggest threat to your 'hobby'. It just shows that you are indirectly supporting illegal hunting.
