CABS patrol vehicle windscreen smashed with boulder
A 50-kilo boulder was used to smash the windscreen of a rented CABS patrol vehicle parked by the roadside in Delimara, the organisation said.
It said in a statement the incident occurred in the early hours as two CABS teams, in the company of ALE officers, were investigating reports of illegal hunting and trapping on the peninsula. CABS said that no one was injured.
“We can only assume that this cowardly attack is an act of is revenge on the part of bird poachers,” committee spokesman Axel Hirschfeld said.
Yesterday CABS bird guards recorded the illegal firing of some 300 shots at birds of prey and turtle doves to the east of Delimara. Police units alerted by CABS arrested two poachers.
CABS said this morning they successfully filmed a poacher with a weapon in his hand and caught a quail trapper red-handed at Ta´ Lombardi valley. Administrative Law Enforcement police are investigating both cases.

I am appaled that this happens in Malta. I am appaled of the poachers who do this. And I am appaled of the maltese people - although most of them are against bird killing - let it happen.

Some still do not realise that such news is spread all over the world .
Therefore those who take pleasure in seeking revenge by force other than by other means like diplomacy are only showing the world, not only Malta, what their temper is like.
Apart from this, every one of these acts of vandalism back fires on who is doing them.
I am sure that the majority of hunters are sane enough not to resort to violence but alas there
are those few IDIOTS who , with their aggressive behaviour, are creating a VERY VERY bad image of hunters in MALTA .
If I were a hunter I would keep it to myself at this moment in time.

Can't you install CCTV cameras in the cars and set up some cameras within the areas, just indefinitely to at least have a proper investigation underway. Interrogate and put pressure on them. Its a real joke that all this is happening, lots of ignorant and uneducated people live amongst us it seems. A tiny island yet sooooo much unethical things are happening right infront our eyes! Lets stop being blind for once! Its just another day & another story....
At least this would get these hunters paranoid even more and hopefully be caught without the whole cat and mouse game. Monitor the situation, just the way you would monitor drug dealers or anyone of that sort.
In the activist documentry 'The Cove' in which they exposed the acts of those massacring dolphins in Taiji, Japan. They set up cameras hidden in fake rocks to capture the horrendous scenes. It worked to expose the reality of the disgusting truth.
Check it out, maybe we will learn a lesson or two - http://stagevu.com/video/yjluebhojrnc

With increasing reports of birdlife and what is happing to cabs and suspicions on hunters it is becoming like the stories of the Wild West frontiers of the USA between the Indians and the settlers and the town sheriff and the law breakers, I wonder what will happen next.

I am not a hunter, and i don't agree with hunters that shoot protected birds, but I think that the publicity in the press is a bit too much, telling tourists not to come to Malta because we kill everything in sight, or the stupid story of shooting a dove, to become a man, and the girls will like him, at least ,we are not shooting little children in schools. why don't Europe ban the savage way the fox is hunted in England, or the the way they kill the bulls in Spain. it is always little Malta that gets mentioned in a bad way.

Its either the ALE are incompetant at their job or CABS are very competant at their job.
I simply cannot understand how CABS were accompanied by the ALE, the crime takes place under their nose and nobody is caught.

As a hunter I must say I am against illegal hunting.
However, I make reservations.
Hunting birds of prey is illegal.
Hunting protected species is illegal.
Hunting quail as promised in the referendum, and election is semi-illegal.
If we hunters were guaranteed by PN, MIC and the Prime Minister, the EU enlargement commsioner that hunting would not be stopped and that we would benefit from a derogation, quail hunting and dove hunting should never in the first place have been illegal. Thus the policeman hunter, and any other hunter would not have had to resort to breaking the law to 'enjoy' the season as promised.
Having said that I will never hunt unless the season is open because I cannot afford to stay paying fines and lawyers for the sake of a few game birds. I prefer to put aside the fine and lawyer money and go for a hunting trip in the UK and catch at least 500+ birds in a week(woodpigeons and other legal quarry)
Maybe the judge in this case used common sense and fully aware that the policeman was victim of dirty political games and lunatic antis, opted for such a judgement?

It is pretty clear to all nin brainwashed people that the car is NOT parked in front of a gate. The gate is behind the car as can be seen in the picture above. Incredible, how people like yourself come up with these rubbish theories to justify such actions. What credibility do you have when you claim such banalities.
Also, if the car was actually parked in front of a gate, does this justify throwing a bolder onto the car's windscreen? Is taking the law into your own hands justified in your head? Your attitude, the fairytales people like yourself come up with and the actions of some hunters are what turned public opinion against hunters.

Let me try to get my head around this local conundrum; A hunts illegally, B and perhaps A smash cars now and then for sport or whatever, C reports and campaigns against the criminal and anti-social behaviour of A and B. D comes along and berates C for exposing A and B as this will give Malta a bad name. Eh? Now that is something that really makes me think.

@Jesmond Micallef. You have the right to stand to your opinion on what is blackmail and not. But with the same reasoning a lot of news items canbe considered as blackmail. The press have the right to report was is true and factual. If you are against reporting an incident in which foreigners are involved as as blackmail then you are infavour of some sort of censorship.

Apr 29th 2010, 21:47
J.Schembri, Please read my comment once again. Have I questioned what is being reported here ? I don't think so. I have also expressed my regret as to what has happened, so I am not against reporting. There are other aspects of the "shooting and killing" kind which should be put into perspective here. Malta does not have a lucrative weapons industry where people can make a living designing machinery with the intent to kill other fellow human beings. No offence, but indeed, animals like myself, to which I as a species belong to. I hope that others join me here, becuase if not, well well..............it further consolidates my view.
The Maltese economy revolves around the hospitality industry. Unless, I have enough proof that larger nations can do without being hospitable to others, then yes, this is BLACKMAIL in disguise. It can be used in order to wreck havoc on the island's economic dependency, putting pressure upon the Authorities to whether they like or not, ...ACT.
I am against the killing of birds, but I am also against hypocricy and double standards, too. Enjoy the Fireworks Festival next Friday, if you can. An very attractive alternative use of explosives !!!.

Very strange incident indeed !! I have seen CABS and BLM members carrying out their activities various times and they will always stay in very close proximity of their vehicles, and sometimes stay inside their vehicles. It is VERY STRANGE that whenever they report such vandalisms, they always happen to be away from their vehicle and they never manage to see the culprits. VERY STRANGE INDEED !!!!!

A lot of readers are too ready to point the finger WITHOUT any kind of proof. I'm afraid hearsay and guesswork will not stand up in a court of law. Well said Mr. Schembri. YES bird life will send out reports to the internation community and WILL try and harm Malta with their reports. The worst part is that even when trappers and hunters are not involved Birdlife still find immaginary things to report to the international community as long as they harm the local hunters.
Also please note that when names of press releases by birdlife are mentioned , 99 out of 100 it is always foreigners making these allegations in our own country and they are applauded by people like you. Try and do the same in their own country!!! You will be thrown out and never allowed to return.

Hunting is practically suspended as only 23 persons have applied for the spring hunting licence. These acts are being committed by a minority of hunters who want to have it the old way ie. if it flies, it dies. Also, the government's persistance in raising hunters' hopes in vain of opening a proper spring hunting season is not helping either.
