CABS patrol vehicle windscreen smashed with boulder

A 50-kilo boulder was used to smash the windscreen of a rented CABS patrol vehicle parked by the roadside in Delimara, the organisation said.

It said in a statement the incident occurred in the early hours as two CABS teams, in the company of ALE officers, were investigating reports of illegal hunting and trapping on the peninsula. CABS said that no one was injured.

“We can only assume that this cowardly attack is an act of is revenge on the part of bird poachers,” committee spokesman Axel Hirschfeld said.

Yesterday CABS bird guards recorded the illegal firing of some 300 shots at birds of prey and turtle doves to the east of Delimara. Police units alerted by CABS arrested two poachers.

CABS said this morning they successfully filmed a poacher with a weapon in his hand and caught a quail trapper red-handed at Ta´ Lombardi valley. Administrative Law Enforcement police are investigating both cases.

Didn't you see the other article regarding the hunter policeman in Gozo. Here it is:

As a hunter I must say I am against illegal hunting.

However, I make reservations.
Hunting birds of prey is illegal.
Hunting protected species is illegal.
Hunting quail as promised in the referendum, and election is semi-illegal.

If we hunters were guaranteed by PN, MIC and the Prime Minister, the EU enlargement commsioner that hunting would not be stopped and that we would benefit from a derogation, quail hunting and dove hunting should never in the first place have been illegal. Thus the policeman hunter, and any other hunter would not have had to resort to breaking the law to 'enjoy' the season as promised.

Having said that I will never hunt unless the season is open because I cannot afford to stay paying fines and lawyers for the sake of a few game birds. I prefer to put aside the fine and lawyer money and go for a hunting trip in the UK and catch at least 500+ birds in a week(woodpigeons and other legal quarry)

Maybe the judge in this case used common sense and fully aware that the policeman was victim of dirty political games and lunatic antis, opted for such a judgement?

Really???? So they are inventing all these stories of threats and vandalism against them only to shame Malta and cause us damage??? Your comments get even more ridiculous and pathetic... Unbelievable, justifying criminal acts by trying to throw bad light on the injured party!

It is pretty clear to all nin brainwashed people that the car is NOT parked in front of a gate. The gate is behind the car as can be seen in the picture above. Incredible, how people like yourself come up with these rubbish theories to justify such actions. What credibility do you have when you claim such banalities.

Also, if the car was actually parked in front of a gate, does this justify throwing a bolder onto the car's windscreen? Is taking the law into your own hands justified in your head? Your attitude, the fairytales people like yourself come up with and the actions of some hunters are what turned public opinion against hunters.

J.Schembri, Please read my comment once again. Have I questioned what is being reported here ? I don't think so. I have also expressed my regret as to what has happened, so I am not against reporting. There are other aspects of the "shooting and killing" kind which should be put into perspective here. Malta does not have a lucrative weapons industry where people can make a living designing machinery with the intent to kill other fellow human beings. No offence, but indeed, animals like myself, to which I as a species belong to. I hope that others join me here, becuase if not, well well..............it further consolidates my view.

The Maltese economy revolves around the hospitality industry. Unless, I have enough proof that larger nations can do without being hospitable to others, then yes, this is BLACKMAIL in disguise. It can be used in order to wreck havoc on the island's economic dependency, putting pressure upon the Authorities to whether they like or not, ...ACT.

I am against the killing of birds, but I am also against hypocricy and double standards, too. Enjoy the Fireworks Festival next Friday, if you can. An very attractive alternative use of explosives !!!.

I am not a hunter BUT
I believe that the CABS car was being driven at a high speed, suddenly braked upon seeing the boulder lying in the middle of the road, flipped over and thus smashed the windscreen and then fell back on its four wheels scratching the bonnet in the process!

I'm not a hunter but I'm so dense I smash car windscreens, stab other hunters, beat up environmentalists, get taken for rides, insult prime ministers, damage trees, fake having breakdowns, think a referendum is a species of bird, think FAK means welcome to my land, think bicis is a german sheperd, hate foreigners, love damaging Malta'a image, absolutely adore killing birds for fun, love dressing up as a soldier & waking everyone up at the crack of dawn, love roaming around the country looking like a complete pratt looking for a dead bird
love showering picnickers with lead, love farming & ploughing rocks & weeds to sow dead birds, love being filmed committing a crime & handing the video footage over to the police.
I repeat I'm not a hunter .

I am not a hunter BUT could it be that the 'boulder' is simply a case of condensed particles of volcanic ash or power station chimney debirs, falling back to earth?......if only CABS had parked their car 3 metres backwards, this would have never happened and it would have simply been a boulder lying in the middle of the road........everybody seems to think that it was the hunters/poachers at it again...tsk....tsk....tsk

I am not a hunter but... for sure this is the work of BirdLife, they are the ones who threw the boulder on the car so that they can blame hunters and make the poor hunters look very bad, how dare they!! I think they shoot protected birds too so that they can get sensational headlines, since the hunters are a bunch of law-abiding citizens!

It surely constitutes blackmail as it jeopardises the survival of the Maltese economy. I for one air my own views with regards to other potential form of incomes other much bigger nations seem to enjoy whatever the case may be, simply becuase they are big, and nothing else !!!Malta does not have these options. That is my case here.

Re your first sentence, "I am neither a hunter etc etc.
I agree with all you have said in this sentence HOWEVER, I do not point the finger and say that hunting should be stopped.
A lot of readers are too ready to point the finger WITHOUT any kind of proof. I'm afraid hearsay and guesswork will not stand up in a court of law. To all readers, CONCRETE EVIDENCE is what the law requires. Innocent until proved guilty. It's called DEMOCRACY, something which our forefathers fought and died for.

The shame is on birdlife who have been causing damage to Malta's reputation for years. They should be imprisoned for what they are doing and the key thrown away. That's what they would do to them in other countries if the hunters do not get them before.

Joe Aquilina

Apr 29th 2010, 16:22

Well said Mr. Schembri. YES bird life will send out reports to the internation community and WILL try and harm Malta with their reports. The worst part is that even when trappers and hunters are not involved Birdlife still find immaginary things to report to the international community as long as they harm the local hunters.
Also please note that when names of press releases by birdlife are mentioned , 99 out of 100 it is always foreigners making these allegations in our own country and they are applauded by people like you. Try and do the same in their own country!!! You will be thrown out and never allowed to return.
When in September over 100 carcasses where found by CABS the news was circulated around the world. How is it that now after so many more months, no more carcasses have been found in mizieb, and at that time they said that under every stone a dead bird was found?

Jesmond Micallef

Apr 29th 2010, 16:29

I condemn any form of vandalism anytime anyday.

Acts of Vandalism like these are indeed to be condemned, but please leave the Tourism argument out of this, as this constitutes "blackmail" which is also ILLEGAL. If people want to abide by the rule of the Law, no "blackmail" IN ANY FORM should be sought on any front, for the matter.

Hunting is practically suspended as only 23 persons have applied for the spring hunting licence. These acts are being committed by a minority of hunters who want to have it the old way ie. if it flies, it dies. Also, the government's persistance in raising hunters' hopes in vain of opening a proper spring hunting season is not helping either. With his attitude, Dr. Gonzi is opening a festering wound every time it starts to heal.
