Last Tuesday I was as usual browsing through The Times when I flipped to the back page for a quick look. A half-page photo of a young, healthy tree was there. The only problem was that this tree had been savagely chopped down. As I read the article below the picture, I was horrified to learn that 104 trees had been vandalised in a brutal manner in the Foresta 2000 site.
Any type of vandalism is to be condemned but to vandalise living trees is especially grave. Trees grow very slowly and have to be given constant care throughout the year, so I can imagine the reason why the park ranger was so upset.
But what baffles me is why did this happen? Why did people feel the urge to destroy these trees? Surely the trees did nothing to earn themselves such a fate. They were there only to beautify our island and help purify the air we breathe.
These vandals are cowards with zero intelligence, who stoop as low as venting their anger against helpless trees which cannot defend themselves. I wonder if they would like to be sawn in half themselves!
I urge the Mellieħa local council to install some kind of security measures so that such incidents don't happen again.
Finally I wish to congratulate all the Foresta 2000 site staff who work tirelessly to provide us with a better environment. Don't let such incidents demoralise you. Keep up the good work.
