The opposition has confirmed that it will second the nomination of Michael Frendo to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as the co-option of Karl Gouder to take up Dr Frendo's seat in Parliament.

The announcement was made by opposition whip Joe Mizzi at a meeting of the House Business Committee.

Dr Frendo will take over from Louis Galea in the Chair on Thursday. Dr Galea will formally become a member of the European Court of Auditors on May 7.

The appointments will be made during a special sitting of Parliament. The first step will be Dr Frendo's resignation from the House and the co-option of Mr Gouder.

Dr Galea will then announce his resignation and the Prime Minister will move a motion for the appointment of Dr Frendo to succeed him.

Meanwhile, yesterday the House unanimously approved the ap-pointment of Nationalist MP Francis Zammit Dimech as Chairman of the House Foreign and European Affairs Committee. He replaces Dr Frendo. The Prime Minister's motion was seconded by Franco Debono (PN).
