Fewer than half of candidates for the English as a Foreign Language exam achieved a pass mark, figures given in Parliament show.

Education Minister Dolores Cristina said 354 candidates sat for the exam in Malta last year, of whom 45 per cent passed. The pass rate was 37 per cent in 2008, 35 per cent in 2007 and just 28 per cent in 2006.
