The General Workers' Union youth section has expressed solidarity with Maltese human rights activist Bianca Zammit, who was shot through the leg by an Israeli soldier during a peaceful protest on Saturday.

The section said the brutality used against Ms Zammit, 28, and other Palestinian demonstrators, was yet another sign of how Israeli forces wished to prevent the Palestinian people from becoming an autonomous state.

They hailed the government's official protest on behalf of Ms Zammit.
