SPCA reports 'animal terrorism' as seven kittens found dead
Seven dead kittens were found scattered beside the road at the limits of Ghajnsielem last night, the SPCA (Gozo) reported today. Another died shortly after being found.
"A very concerned young couple called the Gozo SPCA during the evening, having found one live newborn kitten amongst the bodies," the SPCA said.
An SPCA Officer who visited the scene found three large kittens, one of which had a serious head injury, and another four that were all less than a week old. All appeared to have died gasping for breath, as their mouths were wide open.
Near the kittens was a large paint bucket with a lid.
"It could only be assumed that the kittens had all been shut in the bucket until they suffocated, although how one survived is a mystery. Sadly shortly after being handed to Gozo SPCA the only live newborn kitten, which was already very weak, died," the SPCA said.
The SPCA and Ghajnsielem Council both condemned this 'cruel act of animal vandalism'.
The SPCA pointed out that it spent many years promoting the neutering of cats and dogs to prevent such unwanted births. During the past two years The Blue Cross, Britain’s Pet Charity, provided extensive funding for neutering cats entirely for free for anyone wishing to have their cats neutered. Likewise, ITV Grenzenlos, a German charity and Dogs Trust Malta sponsored the neutering and micro chipping of dogs.
"For those who say that it is not natural to neuter a dog or cat – Gozo SPCA would like somebody to explain what is natural about the death of these poor kittens, which had a right to life too," the society said.
Gozo SPCA has taken in 40 kittens this year. Anybody wishing to adopt a vaccinated, neutered and healthy kitten from the Centrecan phone 21551637 or email info@spca-gozo.org

@James Tyrell - I would consider your comment as semi-credible if the incidents didn't seem to be piling up one by one in Gozo. Instead of worrying about politics and defending the Gozitans, etc., worry about animal welfare and making things better in Gozo. Take off the rose tinted glasses. As for the comments of Mr. Genovese, I agree - and I hope others will too - the preservation of animal life is more important than tourist dollars. By the way, should someone witness these acts - name and shame seems to be quite an effective policy.

@all my fellow animal lovers, this it seems is pretty common here in Malta, the stories I have heard are just heart wrenching. One morning, my colleague came to work in tears and totally white from shock; a woman in Mosta whom lives near a bus stop put a bunch of new born kittens in a plastic garbage bag alive and put them outside her door to be collected by the rubbish collection, my friend had no idea what to do, and I just hoped that the poor little things were rescued, she told me that there were other people whom too were disgusted and whom seemed to be trying to get hold of someone to help out.

Alison Bagley - Our Pope would certainly not think anything good about this atrocious act. He happens to be an animal-lover and was the cat-feeder of the Vatican when he was still Cardinal.
When I read stories like this I just wonder who is the animal and who is the human.

@Joe Genovese. Your comments regarding Gozitans are idiotic. I am a tourist and an animal lover and I have met many Gozitans who love their animals and in fact any animals as much as I do. What give you the right to label all Gozitan people in this way because of the actions of a few cowardly scum who seem to enjoy causing pain and suffering to creatures which can't fight back?

The person who did this is a monster and deserves to be put in jail! How can anyone harm/ kill defenceless and innocent kittens?? I hope that laws regarding animal cruelty are made harsher. Animal cruelty must be condemned and anyone who knows of animal cruelty must report it or else they are considered accomplices.

Seeing the picture of the dead kitten breaks your heart. Hope to hear that the person or persons who did this act are taken to court. I know Gozitan people who really love cats and other animals.I really wish that such cruelty is condemned by the clergy in church and in all religious teaching emphasing that animals are God.s creatures and should be loved and cared for.

At 16:30 this afternoon (29th April 2010) my husband found 7 more kittens, battered to death & dumped in a field at the side of the road from Mgarr to Qala. What is the matter with people? You can have your animals neutered to save you the effort of this constant killing. Or is it something you enjoy? I am disgusted with anyone who allows this to continue happening. What would your Pope think of this?

The only way you' ll get Gozitans to sit up, listen and take note is to have money talk.
The Island's general attitude towards animals is the stuff of horror stories, as this incident clearly shows.
No Church or clergy will change the Gozitans now. Those in the know, wanting to be honest with themselves, will be at pains in trying to commend the role the Church in Gozo has had in imparting the intrinsic value of animals in the scheme of things.
Animal lovers, what the Government, the Church and "Education" and "Religion" have failed, and wil fail, to do, we can do it....together.
Keep away from Gozo. Avoid it like the plague. Nicer, cheaper places to go to.
Spread the word around on the Web's forums. Malta's best kind of tourists also happen to be real animal lovers. Tell them how upsetting a stay in Gozo might turn out to be.
It won't cost YOU a penny. And the beauty of it all is that in time YOU will get your money's worth.
Have the Gozitans face the music....and dance to the tune of the empty cash register.

Really speechles....it's really frustrating since we all ultimately know the Maltese Law will do nothing as always.
New laws have to be introduced regarding this matter.
Also what many ppl do not realize is that such persons who torture and kill innocent animals have clear mental and behavioural problems....thus a problem to society in general.
For those who think I am exxagerating.....really think about it!! is there something "psychologically normall" in doing what these person and/or persons did to these kittens or any other animal?? They should be forced to attend behavioural therapy with some support group etc...

The Members of Parliament , the Magistrates, the Police: do they take animal cruelty seriously? Do they care a lot about animals? they care a little? they don't care?
What about the new spca premises is Gozo. Is the planning authority giving it priority or is the application forgotten under some pile of papers?

@ann mary corkett "Maybe the TIMES should report the action the SPCA and the POLICE are taking to find and apprehend these killers"
Gozo SPCA has no legal powers to investigate such matters. This is a matter for the Police and the Animal Welfare Department.
ann mary corkett
Apr 30th 2010, 03:26
The SPCA may not have any legal powers but they seem to have the ear of the press. I assume they also know the powers of the police in this matter. If the laws are inadequate to apprehend and prosecute these people there may be a role for the SPCA to raise public awareness.
DId the police attend this incident? Has a formal complaint been made?Has anyone taken this up with the police.. Of course I understand that this is very difficult in your current situation but when you get a new centre manager maybe this will be come possible.

In Gozo there are many persons who really take care of stray cats of which there are many. On the otehr hand there are as well really cruel persons. It id difficult to understand this difference of attitude.
Cats do not do any harm. On the contrary they control the rat and mouse population which is tremendous in Gozo. That anyone could arrive at killing kittens is incredible. I have seen dead cats in my area that did not die of natural resources and have seen kittens disappear. On the otehr hand so much is done for these cats. There are peopel that feed them regularly. There are persons that take them to the Vat. the Gozo SPCA, run mainly by foreign residents, do an excellent job and if requested will phone back.
The Local Council could do a lot to control what is happening. Someone out there knows who is responsible and am sure can be apprehended.

Maybe the TIMES should report the action the SPCA and the POLICE are taking to find and apprehend these killers. The public should be made aware of the penalties of this crime. I have a horrible feeling that there are no penalties.... Maybe that is where we should begin.
After the shock of this horrible event we need to move on to planning some action to achieve laws that will protect the weakest entrusted to our care. `if we do not turn this tragedy into action we are failing as a society and these little creatures will have died in vain.
I would like to ask the TImes to undertake a proper investigation of animal welfare in Gozo. There is obviously a lot of public concern and interest.
LET US ALL TURN OUR CHAT INTO ACTION

All this talk about how heartless the aggressor is, is futile. The aggressor - if he/she is reading this (I wonder what cultural/academic level this person can be of) - must be getting a kick out of this talk, generated on what bravura he/she has done.
We NEED laws. Laws that are REALLY applied, not just laid down and rotten away by the book worms. Laws that fairly condemn and ADEQUATELY punish and laws that defend the animal victims from further harm by vindiction as a result of the accusation and that defend the people reporting such cruelty acts.
Is there any way of reporting animal cruelty and abuse that is really taken up seriously and worked upon? Jew ma jezisti xejn fil-verita'? Because I have something to report but have no idea where to start from given that the abuser is an influential person and obviously my report may immediately be dropped !

In a matter such as this; why cannot we concerned citizens of Malta organise an anti-animal terrorism march in Gozo with concerned clergy, citizens, and others (including concerned NGO's). Such a march would serve to bring awareness to the Gozitans whom - as I understand it - are too afraid of their administration to voice their concerns without support. A march such as this would also bring welcome publicity to Malta (and by extension Gozo) that animal cruelty is not taken lightly by citizens. I'm certain many would join such an admirable cause and contribute resources to prevent such a thing from happening again.

this is not an act that we should sensationalise in any way. it is NOT terrorism, there is no cause here. the only motive behind this is total, shameful ignorance. we stick to our mission... our aims continue. we know how tragic society is we have always known that cruelty exists. do not throw your hands up in horror or despair, it only feeds sick peoples minds.
this is something that our moral leaders should take on. here is an opportunity to lead by example. dont let these kittens die for nothing. dont react. we need a response that will bring society with us not to blame. We are the civilised voice our aim must always be to help people learn to be different. we cannot afford to take the luxury of venting our anger and frustration it will damage our long term efforts. for education to work it has to carry a positive message.. i feel great sadness that these people have never felt the love of a kitten.

Apr 28th 2010, 12:56
First off, the picture is 100% inappropriate. The newspaper is trying for shock value but the fact is that those they are trying to shock will only recieve titillation from the sight of this unfortunate.
For those calling for the death of the person, that is not your choice that is GOD'S. For whatever reason, God granted this person life and not one of us has the authority to tell God he is wrong. Does he deserve punishment? Absolutely. Will he eventually get it? Yes. We must all live with the consequences of our actions, even those calling for the death of this individual.
Let me ask you, does your hatred, does your wrath add anything positive to this world? Or, given the lack of laws, would it build to cause you to do acts just as despicable, "In the right cause"? Jesus taught us to forgive the person, not the act. You have not walked in the shoes of the person who did this and cannot judge him/her.
Condemn the act, not the person.

It is something to be disgusted about. I didn't say otherwise.
My comment is only to illustrate that calling for death/maiming of the person responsible is not a good way to go. It makes us no better than the person that commited this heinous act. We do not know what in their life led them to do this and as such WE CANNOT JUDGE THE PERSON.
Regarding my "useless" religion, it teaches me to forgive everyone, including insulting, rude people like you.

I do hope that the Authorities do something about this inhuman cruelty against these innocent animals. Its amazing how many cold blooded people can do such a thing. The best thing that anyone can do to help these stray animals is to tell the SPCA about any abandoned animals so that they are not left in the streets for anyone to harm them. Many adopt animals from SPCA so at least they are offered a home, then ending up suffering this way.
I hope that whoever did this act will suffer in same way or worse.

I had my own experience in Gozo...I was walking back to the place we were staying and heard a whimpering coming from a field...we couldn't find where the sound was coming from, until my husband opened up a waste bin and found a black garbage bag which we opened and found four 'just born' dead puppies and one alive, which we took home and tried to save, but the little pup died the next morning. I was heartbroken. Such animal cruely. Very sad to know these people walk among us. For the record, I'm not saying these crimes occur only in Gozo, they can occur and do occur everywhere. So many commentators ... sitting down comfortably in their armchairs, screaming murder at the perpetrators. But so few helpers in sanctuaries ... so few volunteers helping out in looking after stray colonies ... so few families willing to adopt a cat or a dog from a sanctuary ... what many, many people are after is a status symbol in the form of a pedigree cat or dog ... what many, many people don't want is cats being fed next to their doorsteps, and they shoo away helper and cats alike from their vicinity ... local councils, too, are quick to disseminate declarations of sympathy ... but at the end of the day, let us ask ourselves how many councils are working hard in favour of animals. And, to conclude, when was the last time that the subject of the wellbeing of animals was mentioned in our Parliament?

How about handcuffs behind theior backs & a tight plastic bag over their heads for a couiple of minutes. And don't some of you start about human rights & other crap! Only a sick person could have done this cruelty I am sure that who ever he is needs help cause he feels alone in this world and never felt happy in his life. A person like this should be punished and sent to prison. When you see this picture you feel so bad and hurt and angry at the same time. Everyone who wrote a comment here should do everything he can to help animals and help SPCA and also we should enforce the law when it comes to animal cruelty. Guys, we are supposed to be living in a civilised country. 8f they did wrong, why shold we fall to their level?

Human Beings ......what human beings it is a disgrace to call the human race 'human beings' when you hear about something like this.
What i would call them is 'COWARDS', they should take it out on someone their own size.

I would love to meet the coward that comitted this horrible crime. It is about time that animal welfare laws in Malta become much much more severe than they are are at present. Animals can't speak but this does NOT mean that they do not suffer a horrible death at the hands of these bloody ignorant barbarians who should be in prison!! I am willing to supply my mobile number and address if the cowards that killed these 'animals' would like to come out of their shell and show their faces in public. Whoever you are, YOU are an embarassment to Malta and should be ashamed to look at yourself in the mirror in the morning. Your actions are inexcusable and I hope you rot in the only place that merits imbeciles like yourself...i.e HELL!

I can't believe people are so cruel to these innocent little darlings. Back in Aug 08 my daughter and I were walking down to Sliema we happened to pass an old ladies house. As we walked past we heard a rustle. We were shocked & disgusted to find 3 tiny kittens about 4 days old in her 'Antiporta' in a SEALED PLASTIC BAG! When I rang the bell she said someone dumped them there.... Bull S**t! I'm convinced she put them there, cause if someone wanted to dump them, why would they put them there? Anyway, I rushed them to a vet, we lost the first one after 2 days, the 2nd after a week. We cried our eyes out! I spent alot of money and sleepless nights giving them bottles trying to help them survive....and the 3rd survived. He's our little darling now, the cherry on the cake!

may i ask when law enforcement will be taken in consideration? I think that it is time for us "civilised" country to have new severe laws to protect such creatures and animals must be thrown in prison. I am tired of hearing animals that have been killed and seeing dogs and cats dead in the middle of the road. We heard a lot against hunting and trapping and than we still kill and torture such friends. Shame on us!!

A guy named Gandhi once said "A country is judged by the way it treats its animals".
I can imagine what kind of "person" did this. It's really sick! Must be some sort of Texas Chainsaw weirdo.
The monster who did this is very sick indeed. And the saddest part of this story is that s/he is still lurking around. Its about time the government starts some serious action. Tens of thousands of euros for anyone caught and years of prison. That would be really justified and the majority will stand by such a decision.
One more thing. Was there the need to show this picture? Was there the need to be graphical? The story was enough by itself.

Unfortunately most of the comments I read, only ask for more violence to the person or persons who committed this ghastly act. Violence is supposed to be their territory, not ours, who feel for other sentient beings and creatures. So lets show and sow more kindness and love in the hope that such people would be touched one day soon :) That is our only hope, otherwise we just become like them.

Such acts of cowardice reflect the abysmal depths of darkness that human actions can follow. The law is to set standards, show no mercy with zero tolerance for such despicable crimes. ENORMOUS fines together with a number of YEARS in prison is the only way that a balance that can be achieved for such barbaric acts.
It is up to the legislators of the land to enact such laws and law enforcement officers to implement them. If such crimes are not SEVERELY penalized they WILL continue to recur.

Animal cruelty tends to be on a high increase. When considering the fact that animals, being cats, turtles, dogs, blindly follow human beings and show love, even if they are being hurt, highlights that these persons are simply aliens!!
Just imagining the scenary make you feel sick, feel like vomitting...
Justice calls that these individuals are punished.. but finally they won't learn. Thus there needs to be more animal cruelty awareness. Children are to be raised in an environment which ensure animal's and the environments welbeing and not cruelty!!

I witnessed the same a few years ago when 5 newborn kittens were unceremoniously thrown over the garden wall of a private residence at St. George's Park into the Paceville ringroad. Peak summer, searing hot tarmac- and a 1 storey drop. I stopped my car in time, while tourists and their children burst out crying. I picked up the kittens, took them to St. Julians police station, and was basically told to bugger off. Took them to the vet, who took it upon herself to take them in - but 4 being now very dead, and 1 barely hanging on. Tried to investigate myself, as yet again the police station couldn't be bothered to check it out, and judged by the point of origin of the kittens who the perpetrator(s) were. Who knows if they are still around, playing with their cute little grandchildren. Well done to all. Especially the protectors of the law.

Some may argue that the kittens may not have lived for much longer and that they did them a favour because they did not end up as strays, and they did not have to suffer in life. (although not mentioned in this blog I have encountered such people)
Well if they were neutered in the first place, they would not have had the kittens.
If the owner looked after them, ie kept them at home and only lets them out under his control all this would not have happened.
Killing animals for food at a sluaghter house is one thing.
Killing animals that will be eaten, through a legal hunting/fishing season is one thing.
Killing animals just to 'do them a favour' or through sheer 'criminal satisfaction' is a totaly different ball game.
At least if you cannot home the 'unwanted' a home should have been found.
Leaving them to fend for themselves or else killing them is not the solution.
As usual nobody will get caught, and we will hear of such an incident in the not so far future

Disgusting and the saddest news I have heard for a long time. It shows, but really shows, does it not, the level of culture that many Gozitans - and Maltese - have and what level of humanity we are still living in. It is disgusting, absolutely disgusting to call ourselves intelligent beings, when faced with such atrocities against innocent beings. My opinion is that I find absolutely no difference between abortion and these atrocities - however, the powers-that-be constantly preach against the one and ignore the respect that human beings must have towards the rest of the animal kingdom. This has become a value: a modern value that people of good will must preach about if they are to be taken seriously.
It is strange that SPCA constantly reports about such abuses while its mainland counterpart is constantly silent and is barely heard. What a pity.
Well done to SPCA Gozo. I sincerely wish that you continue your splendid work towards animals - that are as innocent as our children, born or unborn.
