Commemoration of workers killed on the job
The GWU is urging the authorities, the church and all other bodies, to fly flags as half mast tomorrow as a mark of respect to workers who lost their life at their place of work.
The union's Turu Micallef Health and Safety Institute pointed out that April 28 has been declared by the International Labour Organisation as a day of remembrance of workers who died or were injured at their place of work.

@ Arthur Abela.
For your information.
The Canadian Government has designated April 28 as a Day of Mourning some 20 years ago, & Unions in Canada & the States have been celebrating this Day at Memorials and flags are flown at half mast by various Major Companies and work places.
Please enlighten yourself before you shoot you mouth off.

Oh no we will not fall into the GWU trap. Tomorrow is the 28th April and the GWU wants to commemorate the riots of the 28th April 1958. NO half masts for this commemoration.

Arthur Abela Your comments are disgusting Abela. You should be proud that the workers revolted against the colonizer who was depriving them of their jobs. How obsequious to foreigners can some people supposedly Maltese citizens be!!!!

It's good to remember those unfortunate dividuals whose life was terminated because of accidents which were CAUSED by something or someone .
How much better would it be to celebrate them as LIVING?
I would go one step further and state : GWU and All other Unions should UNITE asap and urge the authorities to enforce and monitor health and safety regulations on the places of work.
ONLY by this method shall we be able to have a considerable reduction of mortalities, not to mention those who remain alive but mamed or disabled for the rest of their lives.
I am sure that keeping an open eye ,all of us assist, on a daily basis, to work being carried out not according to health and safety regulations .
I am also of the opinion that hefty fines should be introduced for those who keep resisting to wearing safety atire.
This situation cannot go on as is . Health and Safety is everyone's responsibility and everyone's actions can effect the health and safety of others.
Malta still lags behind to the detriment of who will be the next victim/s .
Who is responsible for EHS in parliament from both sides ?

Good One, John O Scerri. I fully subscribe to your proposal here. More awareness and enforcement in this direction is never amiss, never indeed.
