Transparency International has ranked Malta in 45th place in its annual survey of perceived corruption in 180 countries.

Malta was 36th in the 2008 index, 33rd in 2007, 28th in 2006 and 25th in 2005.

Malta's 2009 ranking places it ahead of EU countries Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria, all former Eastern bloc countries, but behind countries such as Botswana.

New Zealand tops the ranking.

The Corruption Perception Index is based on a number of surveys.
