A man was yesterday remanded in custody after denying the theft of electricity cables from a sewage pumping station and causing €30,000 in damage to equipment when he pulled them out.

Christopher Micallef, 43, is charged with stealing the cables from the sewage pumping station in Miżieb ir-Riħ in Manikata on Friday and relapsing.

Police Inspector Michael Mallia said the damage to the site was substantial, to the tune of €30,000, and if the theft had not been discovered there would have been more damage done because the station pumps sewage.

Magistrate Anthony Vella took the charges and Mr Micallef's voluminous criminal record into consideration before remanding him in custody.

Police Inspector Edmond Cuschieri also prosecuted.
