Underpass to link Dec 13 Rd with 'Menqa'
The project to link December 13 Road with the Menqa area in Marsa will include an underpass and an overlying road to take traffic to and from Valletta.
Transport Minister Austin Gatt said a new road from the Menqa to Valletta Waterfront would be built first, while the tunnel for the underpass would follow.
Transport Malta is still awaiting permits from the Planning Authority.

In my opinion it is waste of money. At present one can go to Il-Menqa by turning from Blata l-Bajda and pass thru the park-and-ride area. If this link will take place (hope not) will it mean additional traffic lights i.e. additional frustration for motorists????

What is urgently needed is a by pass at Attard.
It takes me 1 hour from St Pauls Bay to Hamrun.

I would rather link up Qormi Lowenbrau area with the BOV in Marsa, flying over the bypass and December13 street. Then cars can proceed to Il-Menqa thru Belt il-Hazna (old powerstation). Technically it is difficult because it also requires broadening the street next to the racecourse. But if this can be done, bypassing Aldo Moro street would finally become possible to Luqa, Mqabba,Zurrieq residents

prosit for the idea of an under pass and the \Menqa road to waterfront which is a must due to bad state and most of the tourist who arrived on ships pass from this road.

@ Paul Caruana ----------------------
NOTA BENE . My first comment has been mis-placed (?) and was actually addressed to Sandro Lapira .

You hit the nail on its head Mr. Caruana, you couldn't have said it better! I use that junction everyday on the way to work. At times it simply gets unbearable. The average time to reach the traffic lights from the Santa Lucia roundabout is 10 mins (for a 300 metre stretch of road). On occasions it did take me 30 mins too!
Honestly we can make do without the Menqa underpass, there are a few alternative routes but the Addolorata junction is always a headache

At this stage, one must really question the priorities being attached to Maltese roadworks. First, the government wanted to start work on the ghadira road, then it saw the light and instead switched the work to the much more important Kappara junction.
Now, government in its wisdom has decided to go for the Menqa road, while ignoring completely the vastly more important Addolorata junction!
Does anyone realise the amount of traffic congestion and heavy pollution that the Addolorata junction creates during rush hour?
I would urge the Authorities to reconsider, and to move this junction to the top of their "to do" list.

I agree; The Addolorata junction should be the top priority.

Do you really mean it ? Seems more likely that you are being sarcastic !

Have you kept count of the various PROJECTS that the Hon. Minister has been "constantly' announcing in the last 9 MONTHS ?
His ministry is so pregnant with ideas !

Road is at sea level. When it rains it floods the area. So the underpass is going deeper than sea water level... frightening thought + the engineering difficulties should really push up the price of the tender.

I agree with you about the technical difficulties. Doesn't mean it cannot be done. the british have been building tunnels under rivers since 1843 I bet we can manage to do one today. The advantage of doing it now is that it will be key infrastructure ready before the Marsa regeneration starts in earnest. That area has been neglected for far too long.
Hope the businesses and residents in the area will not be affected too much as this looks likely to be a big upheaval. More importantly I hope they have contingency plans for any archaeologically significant finds along the way.

I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable using a Malta-made tunnel under water. With leaking tunnels, poor road surfaces (even with new and freshly repaired roads), various flooding several times each winter, failing boilers repeatedly paralysing the country, websites that take days to bring back on-line, cable breakages killing communications for hours on end, miscellaneaous cranes and building machinery toppling over, and minor road incidents bringing half the island to a gridlock, Maltese workmanship does not quite inspire confidence.

Would trailers carrying excavators be allowed to use the underpass? :)

So, when they fix up Menqa.. what happens to the Open Centre and the powerstation? Maybe even some of the sea can be cleaned up and the boats pushed out a little like at the waterfront.
