Tuna washed ashore in Qawra

A tuna fish was washed ashore at Qawra Point earlier today.

Policemen and a patrol boat were on the scene as well as men thought to be working for the nearby fish farm. It was not clear if other tuna were in the area but bathers said they had seen at least one fish swimming about. They initially reported the presence of a large fish, thought to be a dolphin.

A government vet was also called.

I would like to comment to Edwin De Marco.....'it is not MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING'. It is God's creature so show some respect......what would you have said had it been your pet (obviously not kept at home lol).....think about it first before talking.....and YES had it been a WHALE you would have heard sirens, because there are people who CARE.

Ramona, we are talking about a fish. Not a pet. Yes, it is Gods creature that we enjoy eating. I think asking us to have respect for a dead tuna fish is going a tad too far. Just how we do not see news reports on someones pet ,such as a dog, being hit by a car or being found dead, I too think that this news story is much ado about nothing! Pointless. Now if they were going to fire up a BBQ, now that is interesting.

It seems quite dead to me, not exactly bursting with life ! So yes, I think we could still call them an endangered species.

They reckon it was a shark which got Thomas Ashby in St. Shomas Bay back in the 1930's. They used to drive tuna into it then I believe.

Happy swimming!

Your comment is hilarious to say the least. Are you suggesting that there will be sharks swarming qawra bay just because a tuna fish washed ashore ???? I can assure you that overfishing has depleted the population of some shark species by 90% !! Get your facts correct before writing nonsense. Who says sharks do not bring tourists? You are not taking into consideration the Diving Tourism industry which brings thousands of tourists to our island every day. Shark Cage diving in Australia, and South Africa (just to mention a couple) are some big industries.

Tony Gatt, Thomas Ashby was not attacked by a shark. Thomas Ashby (14 October 1874, Ashford Road, Staines, Middlesex – 15 May 1931) was a British archaeologist, who died after he fell from the Southampton to Waterloo train between New Malden and Raynes Park, Surrey. You are referring to Mr. Jack Smedley who was killed on the 20th July 1956, at St. Thomas Bay.

First of all, this is not the first time that a Tuna has washed ashore. On other occasions, it was just collected by some fisherman and sold without any fuss.

Secondly, one cannot say for sure if it had escaped from the net or if it was a "free" tuna.

And finally...Looks like Tony Gatt has no idea what he is talking about because all his info is wrong. I strongly suggest that Mr. Gatt never sets foot in the sea because there are many creatures around our shores that can injure him, and Sharks are not on that list! What about Fireworms, Sea Urchins, Skorpian fish, Sting or Electric Rays....OH....Don't forget the Jelly Fish!!
