Chief Justice Vincent de Gaetano, Mr Justice Joseph Filletti and Madam Justice Abigail Lofaro are to be nominated by the government to serve on the European Court of Human Rights, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed.

This is the first time that the government has nominated a woman for the post.

The Council of Europe had rejected previous nominations because they did not include a woman.

The new judge will succeed Justice Giovanni Bonello.
