The Chamber of Commerce has written to the Ministry of Finance, the Economy and Finance, expressing its opposition to a GRTU call for shops to open this Saturday, May 1.

The GRTU said last week that a two-day weekend with no shopping was too long for consumers.

The government still has to announce its decision.

Shops had been allowed to open on Freedom Day, March 31, but the government had said at the time that it did not wish to set a precedent which would be applied to every public holiday. March 31 came on a Wednesday in a week which also included Good Friday.
