Fewer books borrowed but more bought
Libraries in Malta may be buying more books every year but people are borrowing less and less, official statistics show.
To mark World Book Day today, the National Statistics Office issued a set of statistics related to books and other publications.
New memberships in public libraries decreased by 4.4 per cent in 2009 over 2008, while book loans went down 13.8 per cent from three years earlier, 2006.
A total of 25,529 books were acquired by libraries last year, with a staggering 24,322 having been donated.
People, however, are spending more on books, as a 12.6 per cent increase in expenditure was registered over 2008. Magazines and newspapers, however, seem to be losing popularity as a 3.3 per cent decrease was registered.
While the number of books imported increased by 5.2 per cent in 2009 over the previous year, there was a slump of 36.4 per cent in periodicals, which include magazines, newspapers and journals.
Export of books and periodicals declined marginally over 2008; export might also include books being sent abroad for recycling.

i think the photographer should have gone to sliema library to show what a library should look like as it is a showpiece of a library with a friendly and helpfull librarian as well.I am sure there are other well kept libraries unlike the one in the picture which is enough to drive people away.

'24,322 having been donated'
In other words rejected by other libraries.
There are other priorities when it comes to funding such as the inauguration of the Palace Square and the Pope's visit.

"A picture is worth a thousand words" and this picture says indifference, neglect, lack of care, disinterest.... need I go on? I hope the librarian can sort this mess out. Books should be displayed attractively to entice potential readers and organised so borrowers can find what they want. If not then the future for libraries in Malta is very bleak.

@ Anne Farrugia - Well said and exactly my sentiments. How could the Times publish such a picture? It is enough to put any would be book borrowers off. Can you show us something better to turn our kids on enough to go to the Library and borrow books? Wherever that picture was taken should be named and shamed. Disgusting !!!!!!!!

Yes Anne, it doesn't look like much effort was put in before the picture was taken to tidy up the books.

How rude and ungrateful can Anne Farrugia be! If she were a regular borrower from one of our local libraries then she would have known well enough that the libraries are well kept, books always well maintained, staff totally dedicated to help and all suggestions and requests considered. I had registered my children as members before their first birthday and the highlight of our day has always been lying in bed at the end of the day with a good story. The kids call this our quality time together :o) Perhaps that accounts for their being such good all-rounders at school. Besides, have we taken a closer look at the stats? I am under the impression that the Public Library in Floriana is allowing a longer borrowing period than before, which means that members do not need to renew their books so often (which otherwise may have counted as another loan perhaps). Anyhow, sod the statistics! I might be pretty dependent on my laptop nowadays, but nothing beats a book for me.

Well! If the picture shown here are anything to go by regarding the upkeep of libraries in Malta, no wonder fewer are borrowing! Libraries should be made friendlier and inviting to all especailly the young ones as they are our future! If the some of the authorities concerned have the 'I don't care' attitude' well, that is what you get and might as well close shop and stop your whinging mate!
