The PN Parliamentary Group this evening unanimously approved the nomination of colleague Michael Frendo for Speaker.
Dr Frendo, 54, was first elected in 1987. He served as minister but lost his parliamentary seat in 2008 only to regain it in a casual election after Cabinet was announced, leaving him as a backbencher. He is the president of the select House Committee on European and Foreign Affairs.
If his nomination goes through, Dr Frendo will replace current Speaker Louis Galea who will relinquish his role to sit on the European Court of Auditors next month.
Dr Frendo's appointment would give Dr Gonzi the option to co-opt a new MP.
The parliamentary group thanked both Dr Frendo and Dr Galea for their service in the past and congratulated them for their new responsibilities.
