Compost, limestone to cover Maghtab

Open day on Saturday

The former Maghtab dump is to be covered with a blanket of limestone and compost to encourage vegetation and to stop the seepage of gases into the air, Resources Minister George Pullicino said.

The project was approved by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority a few weeks ago and will be taken in hand in the coming days. It will be completed by 2015.

Mr Pullicino said that to date, 400 wells had been dug at Maghtab to divert gases into an oxidiser which burnt them at a temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius to remove toxins.

A total 100 million cubic metres of gases were burnt in the past two years.

Mr Pulicino said that a total of €30 million from European funds were being invested in the rehabilitation of Maghtab and the other former landfills of Sant’Antnin and Qortin and Maghtab, which will become leisure areas.

An open day is to be held at Maghtab on Saturday, for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
