The Premier League crown captured by Manchester United last season was the third in succession, a feat first achieved by Alex Ferguson's team between 1999 and 2001.

Ferguson has steered United to 11 Premier League titles for a total of 18 top-flight championships, equal with Liverpool.

Since the Premier League was created in 1992-93, the Red Devils won it on 11 occasions. The other six went to Arsenal (three occasions), Chelsea (twice) and Blackburn (once).

Before the current season got underway, Ferguson had also led United to five FA Cups, three League Cups, three European titles (including a Cup Winners' Cup win), one Intercontinental Cup and one Club World Cup.

United finished five points ahead of Chelsea and clinched the crown on the penultimate weekend of the campaign, following a 0-0 draw against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The most decorated player for United is Welsh wizard Ryan Giggs who played a part in all 11 Premier League titles won by the Red Devils under Ferguson.

The legendary Bobby Charlton, now a club director, remarked that the 2008-09 United team was the best in the club's history, surpassing his own era of the Busby Babes that among other honours also lifted the European Cup.
