Large wooden animals in the children’s area of Independence Gardens in Sliema were vandalised by unknown people last night.

Sliema council secretary Althea Borg said she received a telephone call informing her of the vandalism at 7.15 a.m.

She said five out of the seven wooden animals which children play on had been damaged.

The 'animals' had already been vandalised in December and were repaired recently. They were still in the process of being repainted. The repairs cost the council €1,100.

Ms Borg said that there must have been more than one vandal since different footprints could be seen on the animals, indicating that the wood was shattered when it was violently kicked.
