Żurrieq Wolves AC runner Alfred Debono was among the thousands of participants at last Sunday's Vienna marathon.

The 61-year-old, who has dominated the local scene at his age bracket these past few years, registered a remarkable time of 3:04.07 to finish first in his category for veterans.

In Vienna, Debono was classified at no.317 overall. At the start, there were around 32,000 vying to complete the distance in one of the most prestigious marathon runs in Europe.

Kenya's Henry Sugut and compatriot Hellen Kimutai won the men's and women's marathon respectively on Sunday.

Sugut clocked 2:08.40 for the 42.195-kilometre race to claim victory ahead of compatriot Joseph Lomala Kimospo. Kimutai's time was 2:31:05.

Debono will now shift focus on his next marathons outside Maltese shores as he intends to run two races in a matter of 28 days across the Atlantic in autumn.

On October 10, Debono will be running in Chicago and less than a month later he will take part in the more prestigious New York Marathon.
