Air Malta to operate more relief flights
Eight extra relief flights are to be operated by Air Malta, the airline said this morning.
Airlines, including Air Malta, had to cancel most of their flights to Europe because of volcanic ash cloud extending from Iceland, to the UK, Scandinavia and moving down to central Europe including parts of Russia.
Due to this cloud, parts of European airspace have been shut down.
Air Malta said in a statement that since there was no improvement in the situation this morning it was constrained to cancel all flights with the exception of KM784/5 to Istanbul, KM668/9 to Palermo, KM612/3 to Reggio/Rome, KM1308/9 to Catania and KM696/7 to Tripoli.
Today, it will be operating the following flights:

Air Malta flight KM614/5 to Rome/Reggio will operate as scheduled.
Due to the fact that UK airspace closure has been extended till 6 a.m. UK time tomorrow, Air Malta’s morning flights to the UK have been cancelled.
Air Malta will be operating more extra relief flights over and above its normal schedule subject to the lifting of airspace restrictions and flight slots confirmed.
Air Malta is closely monitoring the situation and will advise its passengers of any changes in its flight operations as a result of these airspace restrictions on www.airmalta.com.
Air Malta is offering its passengers free re-booking on any Air Malta operated scheduled flight or full refund of ticket. For any re-booking or re-routing enquiries clients can contact Air Malta’s International Call Centre on +356 21662211. The call centre will remain open until midnight and will open again for business at 0500hrs (local time).
Due to this situation, clients due to travel from Malta International Airport are advised to contact flight enquiries of the airport on tel: 5004 3333 for further information and to confirm flight arrival / departure times.

Quotes I came across these last few days:
About Iceland: They can neither manage their cash nor their ash!
About airline people: Three ulcer men working in a five ulcer environment!

Dear Mr. Sammut ma tistax tistenna naqra??? you should have a diary...plan things for next week MAYBE you will manage to work it out!!!! I work in tourism - in an incoming travel agency so if you can uderstand we have clients at the moment stranded in Malta as they cannot go back to their country and we have clients wanting to come to Malta for their holidays. At the moment there is a total chaos. we don't know what is happening tonight let alone on Wednesday. You cannot blame airmalta for this because if that is the case blame every airline as well! Ah yes, if you can afford to work outside the island, you can afford to pay the price of € 1.50 telephone call to KM. how on earth do you expect everything for free???? we don't seem to have patience at all. well done KM - good service you are giving us.

Mr. Abela, I am sorry but I have to disagree with you. I was booked on a Ryanair flight to London last Sunday and was offered a refund or a rebooking for free. By the time I noticed it the flights had filled up till Sunday and I found an Air Malta flight on Thursday and booked myself on that. Don't take this the wrong way, I have flown Air Malta twice last summer and again this February and April and I think that they have good service, so this is in no way an attack on them. However I was not “dumped” by Ryanair. British Airways left me hanging out dry more than Ryanair did by taking so long to cancel my London to Glasgow flight.

@r sammut
and how the heck do you expect anyone to know what volcanix will decide to do,not even the meteorolgists who are monitoring the situation around the clock can predict this. Milan opened for two hours this morning, thinking that flights will start taking off normally. It closed at nine am ,stopping even one plane which had its engines running ready for take off.
Maybe you can send your work schedule to volcanix....he can then roster his explosions around it :)

Not really impressed by the service!!
The tel: 5004 3333 charged me Euro 1.50, to get an answer that they do not know if flights will be working on Wednesday to London!!!... and to phone again tomorrow!!
How can they expect me to reschedule my work by leaving me hanging till the last minute?!!!

It is MIA that charges for that phone call not Air Malta. You can call Air Malta Customer Care on the other number 21 66 22 11. But prepare yourself for a few minutes holding as the lines are, as expected, literally busted with calls. Hu Naqra Pacenzja u rringrazzja l'Alla li int booked ma l-Air Malta. Haddiehor halla l-klijenti lampa stampa.

Well done Airmalta! The extra flights and the free flight rebooking proves the the social and national soul of our national airline.
Lessons should be learned when one contemplates how other airlines, especially the Low Cost ones dumped their clients.
Full points to Air Malta.
