I signed the petition by Gift of Life foundation supporting an amendment to the Constitution to state that life begins conception.

I watched Joseph Muscat, the leader of the Labour Party on TV some time ago, ducking and diving questions on whether or not he agreed with protecting the unborn child through an amendment to the Constitution.

When the presenter of Dissett asked Dr Muscat if he agreed with the right to life amendment, the Labour leader responded by quoting what was written on a local tabloid which reported that Eddie Fenech Adami had said he disagreed with the entrenchment of the criminal code on abortion into the Constitution but that he agreed with clarifying the right to life through a change in the wording of the Constitution.

Dr Muscat claimed Dr Fenech Adami disagreed with the right to life amendment, which of course, he clearly did not.

I even went back to read the interview and he clearly did nothing of the sort. Was this a deliberate attempt to confuse the two issues and to hoodwink pro-life viewers?

Why is it so painful for Dr Muscat to agree to the amendment clarifying that life begins at conception? Why did he look so painfully uncomfortable when confronted by this issue?

I do hope that Gift of Life will not give up on its campaign. I hope that PL will do the right thing, even if it has been six years since the party promised to take an official stand on the amendment.
