PL pays tribute to Manwel Dimech
The Labour Party this evening paid tribute to Manwel Dimech during a ceremony in front of his monument in Valletta.
The party described Manwel Dimech as a hero who had a vision for the country and whose principles led to his exile in Alexandria. He worked for the people not to remain ignorant and to be educated to be able to progress.
The ceremony was led by Labour leader Joseph Muscat and attended by, among others, deputy leader Toni Abela, PL president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, other party officials and members of the PL’s administration.

Oh come on Ernest. You are not talking to babes-in-the-woods here.
Dimech was a thorn in the side of the Church and they were very glad to get rid of him. It is a fact that the Church and the Colonial powers colluded on matters that threatened their hegemony of the Maltese islands.
If history proves the Church complicit, which it is, then nobody is using history to attack the Church - they brought it all on themselves by their un-Christ-like actions and abuse of power.

Ma naqbilx miegħek Sur Grixti dwar Dun Gorg. Dun Gorg sab ħafna diffikultajiet meta beda jgħallem it-tfal tat-toroq. Ħafna nies sinjuri u fosthom anke xi qassisin ma kienx jaqbillhom li l-foqra jitghallmu jaqraw u jiktbu. Bdew ixerrdu anke ħafna qlajjiet fuqu personali. Wahda mir-regoli ewlenin biex bniedem jissieheb fl-ghaqda Museumina kienet li jrid ikun jaf jaqra u jikteb imqar bil-Malti, biex it-tghalim jgħaddih lil haddiehor. Tant ma ntogobx Dun Gorg li għal 25 sena biex jiftah Museum xi mkien ried ikollu l-permess tal-kappillan tal-post. U għal bidu kif fetaħ harget ordni mill- isqof biex jgħalaq kollox. Ħafna soċji tal-Museum għenu ammont kbir ta żagħżagħ jgħamlu l-eżamijiet tat-tarzna. Kien wiehed minn tal-bidu li l-kitbiet tiegħu għan-nies kien qegħed jiktibhom bil-Malti lingwa tal-baxxi dak iż-żmien avolja kien mgħallem fit-Taljan u l-Ingliż.. Dun Ġorġ vera li qeda l-knisja lejalment pero jekk taqta r-reliġjon l-valuri li żergħu ħafna soċji għadhom jgħoddu sal-llum u tellgħu ġenerazzjonijiet ta' persuni b' karattru sod.
Manwel Dimech sfortunatament sab ħafna affarijiet kontrih u kważi lanqas tista tassoċjah ma wieħed mill-partiti li għandna llum peress li, kellu idejat miż-żewġ partiti. Dan għaliex waqt li kien jrid l-indipendenza mill-kuruna Ingliża, b'hekk dejjaq lil awtoritajiet, Dimech ried li l-ħaddiem iqum fuq saqajh

One of the world's greatest butchers, Mr. Stalin, has a marked granite grave with a bust on top of it too, apparently !!!!
The grave of Manwel Dimech is unkown.
Dun Mikiel Xerri - Dun Miju Zarb - Guglielmu Lorenzi - Mattew Pulis, Mikiel Anton Vassalli.....at least these are known.

How can you compare Dun Gorg Preca with Manwel Dimech? Dun Gorg worked for the Church and therefore the "Establishment" and to indoctrinate little children in the Catholic Church, while Manwel Dimech wanted the Maltese to free their minds from superstition.
And time is already proving who was right between the two. Manwel Dimech is our national patriot and hero and belongs to Malta. Saint Gorg Preca, although Maltese, belongs to the Church that he served so well.

@ Trevor Lorenzo Mizzi while I don't agree with the exile of Manwel Dimech, we must history not by today's mentality were people's right were less than nothing...its truly a pity that the church worked with those who we ruling us. But at the same time there were people that were trying to give formation to the Maltese citizens so that they could stand up for there rights...Saint George Preca altough against the ideas and teachings of Dimech, he has given a valid formation to many people, and helped the Maltese Society to come out from superstition...Dimech must be honoured for his sufferings in a land far away but lets not use this to attack the church

The church deserves everything thrown at it and then some.
Manwel Dimech was done wrong by to powerful institutions and this is true now as it was true in the early part of the 20th century.
Mr. Dimech was treated shabbily in life and he deserved better.

Manwel was perhaps one of those gifted yet unfortunate people who that although being an islander he still managed to sort out his character and yet the politics of the time just didn't give him a chance. That onus is on all of us Maltese.

Sad that we cant even all agree to pay honour, irespective of party politics ,to a true patriot. Suffered excommunication, humiliattion ,prison, exile and death in a strange land. How pathetic and vindictive.

Manwel Dimech was a man ahead of his time, a great Maltese person.
Both the Church and the British governor of Malta said "good riddance to this freethinker" when news of his death in Alexandria arrived in Malta via telegram.
Two oppressing powers that worked in tandem when it suited their interests.
