Dancing waters for the Pope
Malta’s national anthem and that of the country of a visiting head of state are to start being played alternately on the hour to the synchronised dancing of the waters in St George’s Square, Valletta.
Starting from this evening, the waters are dancing to Malta’s and the Vatican’s anthems in preparation for the Pope’s visit tomorrow.

I would really appreciate if the Maltese public were to know the point of all this. Why alternately play and please note, by the hour, two anthems a day before a head of state is to visit? It doesn't make sense.

As an engineer I feel somewhat embarrassed at this situation. All that dancing water is a result of four to six ball valves being manually operated on a bang bang system, and a try at proportional control. Surely modern technology can do better than that. I suggest that the music should be interfaced to a computer where through signal processing cards, the frequencies are detected through a Fast Fourier transform and their magnitude would control the servo in a PROPORTIONAL valve to really make the water dance, or else if a staccato is required, to compare the magnitude to a reference, and a comparator is triggered to give logic one or logic zero to operate on a bang bang philosophy. Hence the software would bring in rows of waterjets according to frequency contents of the music, and the nature of the dance would be magnitudefrequency controlled. Each water jet would be surrounded by three lightsRGB and a computer light mix would create all the colours as in a TV screen. In addition if the water jets are on a universal joint that could be swung laterally and rotated at the same time, conical and flowery water petals could be shaped.

Charles Camilleri's Malta Suite is a masterpiece which is perfect to compliment such dancing waters but definately not the Maltese anthem. That is an insult. Who the hell is the organiser? hopefully not xi delettant !

I fully agree with Victor Laiviera
I am totally gobsmacked by this awful idea to use National Anthems in this way. Not is just not on.Totally disrespectful of the essential idea of what an anthem is all about.
Had they used Charles Camilleri's MALTA SUITE the idea would have been delightful.

Using National Anthems in this manner cheapens them. The person or persons who dreamed up this idea must have the same mentality as the people who used to use the Triton Fountain for variety shows - untill they broke it.
There are many musical compositions suitable for this purpose.
Leave the National Anthems alone.

Surely , anyone in close PROXIMITY IS DUTIFULLY BOUND and OBLIGED TO STAND STILL IN HONOUR while and every time ANY National Anthem is played . Otherwise it 's AN OFFENSE and DISRESPECT ! IC-CUCATI QED JOHOLQUHOM KULJUM .

i think it is wonderful. This should be done everyday. At least once in the morning to start the day with our national anthem, reminding us of who we are, and again in the evening when the sun goes down to salute the day. I am proud to be Maltese and catholic.

Dancing waters replacing the Sette Giugno Monument in a feeble attempt to masquerade history...... just like the temporary tarmac icing given on the roads on the Papal path.

The attention is being drawn on the dancing of waters rather than the anthem. Choose another tune.
The street lights should not be switched off. In the first place the fountain colours should have been visible in normal evening lighting.

Sur Busuttil, meta jindaqq l-Innu Nazzjonali ta' pajjiz, in-nies prezenti jqumu dritti u siekta, bla ma jitniffsu bhala sinjal ta' rispett lejn dak il-pajjiz. Ahna li ktibna kontra din l-ideja 'originali' ghamilna dan mhux biex ingergru izda biex inwaqqfu lil min irid juri l-injoranza tieghu. Jekk iridu jistghu jdoqqu muzika tradizzjonali. Li tuza Innijiet Nazzjonali ghal dan l-iskop huwa gaffe kbir ta' protocol u insult lil min jaf kif imorru l-affarijiet.

Ghax huma nies bhalek, li jikkuntentaw bil-ftit, li jzommu dal-pajjiz milli jimxi 'l quddiem. Jien li nghix barra minn Malta nara qabza kbira fil-kwalita' u fil-livell ta' xoghol li tara fit-toroq. Ghalhekk ingerger fuq Malta. Ghax kapaci naghmlu l-affarijiet hafna ahjar imma ma rridux.

The square looks so dark. Why don't we light it up a bit, like squares they have abroad? It would make it prettier in the evening. Or does it cost too much electricity?

As a sign of respect do people in nearby cafes stand up every time the anthems are played or stop licking their ice cream? what does the waiter do whilst crossing the street with an overloaded tray? Well done to the fountain programmer. Pretty in its tackiness!

This is a terrible idea. National Anthems are not jingles to be played aimlessly. They are highly symbolic works and should only be played at specific moments when they can be accorded their due respect. I hardly think that the people who happen to be in the Square will respectfully stand still when these anthems are played, as is their due according to custom. This ill-thought out plan (though surely well-meant) should be reconsidered.

Thats really nice. It reminds me of a large fountain with similar musical and lighting effects I had seen when in Barcelona quite a long time ago now.
Very nice.
