Finishing touches on Pope's throne Symbols associated with St Paul
Finishing touches are being made to two thrones to seat President George Abela and Pope Benedict XVI, who arrives on Saturday.
The two cathedrae were designed by Carlo Schembri, who passed on the template to sculptors Victor and Carmelo Mansueto who fashioned the thrones out of solid tulip wood.
The thrones are undergoing paintwork prior to the gilding process. Paint work and silk and velvet upholstery is in the hands of Paul Camilleri from Camilleri Paris Mode.
Describing the concept of the designs for the two thrones,
Mr Schembri said they were inspired by the symbols usually associated with St Paul such as the snake, the flame and the sword.
"The dimensions of Pope Benedict's cathedra were based on the ergonomics of His Holiness as prescribed by the Vatican."

All this unassuming modesty in little Malta, one can only imagine the throne that awaits his Holiness in Haven, in line to St Peter, next to all the past and future popes.

His Holiness Pope Benedict deserves to be seated on the throne reserved for him by Christ Himself. He is God's representative on earth and we, Catholics, will offer our energy and wealth to show our appreciation towards His Holiness. Well done to the MALTESE artists who prepared the beautiful throne.

To all those who are moaning sanctimoniously about this throne: if Christ were to come again (since most of you consider the Pope to be His representative on earth, anyway) would you offer him a decent chair or a cross? Just wondering...

What a waste... and how far removed from what Christianity is all about.

I'm struck by the humility bourne by the King of Kings, Our Lord Jesus Christ made Man, depicted as born in a stable and His Representatives on Earth are all for Pomp and Honour!
