Mepa has approved amendments to plans for the Xghajra sewage treatment plant which will reduce its footprint by 4,000 square metres and also reduce the visual impact.
The most significant changes are fewer gas storage tanks and a smaller area for administrative offices.
The gas is produced during the treatment process and will be used for the operation of the plant itself, making it energy self-sufficient.
During a Mepa board meeting this morning, Water Services Corporation officials, responding to the concerns of Xghajra local council, said land had been expropriated so that access to the plant would be through a new road and not from the heart of the village or the promenade.
They said that odours from the plant would be lower than projected in the original plans.
The WSC officials reiterated their commitment to landscaping around the plant and said a meeting with the council would be held next week.
