The 18th century fountain at Saqqajja Hill has been restored in a project which cost €15,000.

Built by Grand Master Vilhena on the site of an existing spring, the limestone fountain had started to crumble and a lot of its sculpture work was lost.

The work, which included cleaning, plastering, stone replacement and restoration, started towards the end of May last year.

The works were carried out by the Restoration Section of the Works Division, which falls within the Rural Affairs Ministry.

In the beginning of the 17th century, the spring was connected to canals and other springs which formed part of the aqueduct built by Grand Master Wignacourt to take water to Valletta.
