Printed directory to be retained as an essential service
There will continue to be a printed telephone directory which has to be provided as an essential service, the Malta Communications Authority said.
It said in a statement that after thorough analysis of the feedback it received following a consultation process initiated in May, it decided that the printed directory should be retained as one of the services which will continue to be provided as a universal service.
Universal services are the minimum set of electronic communication services considered essential to the public, such as access to fixed telephony services, a printed directory and directory enquiry services and access to public payphones.
Such services also include measures for disabled users, a provision of reduced tariffs to eligible users and means to ensure that users can control expenditure, such as pre-paid and call-barring services.
These services should be available upon reasonable request without distorting competition and must be provided at an affordable price.
Parties interested in providing any of these services should submit an expression of interest by June 30.
The provider of each universal service will then be designated following an evaluation process.

If the directory enquiry service is a Universal Service, why is it at a cost?

Keep me out and hope I don't need to pay not to be included in any printed directory. Speaking about environmentally friendly!

Printing the whole directory is an essential service, but not for everybody. In my case, it's a waste of paper and space. Electronic searches are faster and accurate then having to go through thousands of fine printed text.

Shouting?
Me?
Apologies Mr Pollard. Did not know about this capital letters shouting business. Shan't do it again. I promise.
As Mr Barrett says not eveyrbody has access to a pc and I do wish to have a normal, old fashioned if you like, directory with postcodes to browse through.
Do we have to click for everything?

Some (lucky or unlucky) people do not have an Internet connection and therefore an Internet Directory is not much use - not much use during a power cut for most people either.
Providing a hard-copy telephone directory is an essential service and not including the post code with telephone numbers, name and address is just skipping the job. If you are going to produce this document, at least do the job properly so that it becomes a more useful and complete document.

We invite the general public and businesses to submit their details for immediate inclusion in the Malta Online Directory - http://www.directory.com.mt - completely free of charge.
This directory allows full control of your information, which you can remove any time and from anywhere. One may also include: up to two numbers, a business logo and fully searchable text. The search method is very simple and similar to Google's.

May I point out two things to Mr Zammit Tabona and other readers please.
Firstly try not to type your messages all in capital letters as this is regarded as shouting and therefore rather rude.
Secondly there is an excellent postcode finder on the internet http://postcodes.maltapost.com/
It is easy to use and fast.
Thanks - Chris

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE NEW TELEPHONE DIRECTORY SHOULD INCLUDE THE NEW POSTCODES WHICH NOBODY KNOWS OR REMEMBERS. I HAVE FORGOTTEN WHAT THE NEW POSTCODE WAS AND STILL USE THE OLD STJ08.SHOULD I WRITE TO ANYONE I MAY LOOK UP THE ADDRESS IN THENEW TELEPHONE DIRECTORY. THE OLD ONE HAS NO POSTCODES.
IF MALTAPOST SERIOUSLY WISHES THE MALTA POSTCODES TO BE USED BY US THEN THE ACCESS TO THEM MUST BE MADE EASY
