Starmax athlete Nicole Gatt, 13, won a gold medal during a meeting in Crystal Palace, England, last week. Gatt came first in the 800m race for U-15 girls.

The meet, a showcase for promising track and field athletes, is organised annually by the Hercules Wimbledon AC and Gatt's participation was not the first for a Maltese athlete.

Gatt is coached by Mark Farrugia. It was on his recommendation that she attempted the 800m. This event is not normally run in Malta for Gatt's age group.

The 2009 U-14 Athlete of the Year was second at the Wrexham Games last August with a time of 2:28. She completed the distance at Crystal Palace in 2:26, confirming her prowess in track running.

Recently, Gatt established new U-14 Malta records in the 300m and 1,200m races. The best marks before belonged to Francesca Xuereb.
