Air Malta launches new services to Italy with €79 offer

Turin

Turin

Air Malta will start operating twice-weekly flights to Genoa and Turin in summer.

In a statement, the airline said it has committed to float over 7,000 seats on these routes that are expected to generate new tourism opportunities from the Italian market.

Air Malta’s Turin flight will be operated directly every Monday and Friday and as from May 14. Flights to Genoa will be operated via Reggio Calabria every Tuesday and Saturday as from May 4.

Following the opportunities which arose after EU accession, whereby Air Malta can sell seats on intra-European flights, the Maltese airline is able to operate and sell seats on the Reggio Calabria/Genoa sectors. Such opportunities make flights such as the Malta - Genoa route, starting next month, feasible to be operated by Air Malta, it said.

The Italian market has always been important for the Maltese airline. The Rome route was in fact among the handful of routes that Air Malta operated since its birth in April, 1974.

Throughout the years the Italian market has grown and last year it became the second largest market after the UK for tourism to Malta. In 2009, Air Malta transported 259,139 scheduled passengers to/from Italy, representing an increase of two per cent. As from the end of this month, Air Malta will be increasing its seat capacity on the Italian market by around 60,000 more seats, a 20 per cent increase over last year.

To celebrate the launch of these new services, Air Malta is offering special fares starting from €79 return, inclusive of taxes. The two routes will complement Air Malta’s other Italian routes of Bologna, Verona, Rome and Milan that are also being offered starting from this low-fare price and will be served with additional convenient flying times.

No service fees are charged to tickets issued via Air Malta’s portal www.airmalta.com.

An additional fee of €5 on each ticket is applicable to all tickets issued from the call centre, while each ticket issued from the airline’s sales office is subject to a €10 service fee. Certain conditions and travel restrictions on these offers may apply.

Simple - Summer is the high season and that is where the money is. Just like high street shops, you won't find special rates in the high seasons.

Delays are largely due to air traffic control restrictions and airport congestion. Ryanair uses out of the way airports with little traffic. Regarding luggage, Air Malta handles much more pieces per flight than Ryanair and this has to be taken into account. It is not like Ryanair bends backwards to ensure that no luggage is misplaced.

in all the 20 tears i been flying with air malta from cardiff we have always departed on time and in facet last year we arrived at malta 30 minutes ahead of time as air malta was able to take a faster route. maybe the delay issues are from your departing airport and not the airline

Quality? Ryanair? Let's see is it the cramped non reclining seats or the stampede like boarding you like the most? Or perhaps the do-it-yourself everything for which you still have to pay whereas you will get a better service for free with Air Malta? Maybe it is the way Ryanair treats passengers when all does not go well? Or is it the thought that, if you are checking luggage, you might have to open your bag in the middle of the airport and actually take out and put on some of the clothes inside, even in our summer heat, in order to avoid paying their hefty excess baggage fees? Pray, enlighten us as you seem to be the only one on this thread that think so.

Ryanair may be cheaper but the service and quality is disastrous. It can never be as good as Air Malta. Unfortunately, Air Malta's prices are expensive, true, but the service is excellent and the flight is much more comfortable.

My last flight with Ryanair was horrible- we paid for priority boarding and everyone was on the plane before us. I hope I'll never have to travel with Ryanair again.

First of all Mr. Tabone, these flights are designed to tap into the Italian market, not for you to save a couple of Euros for your flights. Thats what the article is about.

Secondly, I really hate it when people start to make comparisons between Air Malta and Ryan Air. One is an airline and the other a flying bus service. One is a LOCAL INDUSTRY supplying LOCAL JOBS, and the other is owned by a stingy Irishman, who will start charging you to use the loo!

I know whom I'd rather fly. And it cant be about me,me, me all the time. People with your mindset will run our proud national airline into the ground, with the loss of MALTESE JOBS. People like me don't want to see that.

Have you ever flown with RyanAir? Can anyone compare a low-cost airline with a National airline? Do you know about the hidden costs? I flew with Ryanair and I cannot complain about them but I had no luggage with me. Enough said.
To be honest, I never expected Dr. Demarco to do so well in his ministry. Welldone.

Well done AirMalta! Some people have forgot how costly flying from Malta up to not so long ago! Competition is most welcome! But AirMalta is definitely providing value for money flights ... especially given the tip top service of our national airline! Which is by far superior to that of any low cost airline.
Nonetheless, it is a pity that AirMalta is not doing flights to Scotland anymore!

@ J. Tabone,
add return bus from Luton to central London and you're probably quite close (or well above?!) to 79Eur!
