Customs officers seized 13,000 contraband cigarettes, a quantity of tobacco and Vodka bottles after searching a vegetable vendor's van in Marsa yesterday.
The search followed a tip-off.
A further 35 packets of contraband cigarettes were found in a bar in Paola in a follow-up operation.
Investigations are continuing, the Customs Department said.

@ Antoinette Cefai
You are making serious allegations about hard working Public Officers here. Your insinuations are unfounded and very unfair to a nucleus of over-worked Customs officers who have been giving very good results relentessly for quite some time now.
Week in, week out newspapers are reporting about drug siezures, contraband fuel, uncustomed alcohol and tobacco and who knows what else goes undetected by the media.
This sort of success is not the fruit of loose gossip, but serious investigations and face to face dealing with unscrupulous and dangerous individuals.
I would not dare imagine that Ms Cefai or some relative has been at the receiving end of these law enforcers' commendable action.
Keep it up guys, the public is noticing your dedicated work.

@ I. Cilia.
Under Maltese law nobody can grow a tobacco plant without a licence.
