Muscat in emotional meeting with late Chinese worker's son
Opposition leader Joseph Muscat has had an emotional meeting in Shanghai with the son of a Chinese worker who died in Malta in March 1979 during the building of the 'Red China' Dock.
The meeting was held at the end of Dr Muscat's visit to China.
The PL said the meeting with Xu Genyuan was held at Dr Muscat's request to honour the memory of his father, who had been awarded the Midalja tal-Qadi tar-Repubblika posthumously in April 2009.
Earlier, Dr Muscat met officials wo are preparing for the opening of the World Expo next month. He said that the fact that President George Abela had been invited for the opening of the expo was a mark of the esteem in which the Maltese people were held.

NiHo worked for 18 months at the Red China dock / 6
.Back then hardly any rank among the Chinese where work was concerned . They where an egsample of resourcefulness and efficiency and Non Fussy whatsoever .
They abhored lazyness and appreciated genuinely good work effort and busy workers like no others

If the same emotions were shown by our leaders to each other , we will be in good shape. Instead, all our leaders do on both sides is create division.

Indeed, well done Dr Muscat...Let us not forget all the workers that lost their life at Malta Drydocks including other foreign ones... Let us not also forget that the Chinese, together with MDD employees, also built all the surrounding infrastructure of Dock number 6 'The Red China Dock' (including those enormous cranes) which at that time not only was nicknamed 'il-hofra' by the party in government but was also seen as a bad omen because the 'communist' where doing it. As a 1989 Malta Drydocks apprentice, I remember well the cheerfulness, the bravery and the friendliness of the Chinese workers.

I can imagine the emotion the Labour Leader, Dr. Muscat felt when he met the family of Xu Huizhong, the lathe engineer , who was accidentally killed in Malta, when with other hundreds of Chnese workers they were building the largest dock in the Mediterranean--the Red China Dock
What a pity that this largest dock in the Mediterranean which the Nationalists at time called 'Il-Hofra' is now closed.
In September 2008, I visited the family in their modest apartment in Shanghai accomapnied by my nephew, Mario Calleja, the Mayor of Marsaskala.
In l979 Prme Minister Dom Mintoff, knowing that I was visiting Chna, assigned to give the Gieh ir-Republika to the widow of Xu Hui Zhong.
The ceremony held at the People's Hall in Shanghai was charged with emotion and pride. The than Maltese Charge D'Affairs of Malta, Dr. Clifford Borg Marks, who is now a practiicing lawyer in Beijing and a well known film director in China, translated the speech I made in Maltese, into Chinese.
Last week, on Sweeping Tombs day, ( All Saints Day ), the tomb of Xu, at the Adolarata Cemetry, was beautifully restored.

A good and welcome gesture. As we remember our own,so we do not forget those who came from distant shores to help us when we needed help, despite the propoganda against on this Island at the time.
