There were 37 applications up to 3 p.m. from hunters wishing to be granted a special licence for spring hunting, informed sources told timesofmalta.com.

Applications are being received at Maltapost branches.

The government said last week it would allow hunting in the last week of this month, but special licences would only be granted to 2,500 hunters.

There are some 15,000 hunters holding a general hunting licence in Malta and Gozo.

The hunters' federation (FKNK) called on hunters to boycott the call, saying the season was ridiculously short and accepting it would set a precedent for the future.

It also warned that it would name and shame hunters who applied for the special licence because they would be harming the future prospects of thousands of hunters.
