FKNK to 'name and shame' hunters who apply for special licence
The hunters' federation said today that it would name and shame any hunters who applied for the special licence for spring hunting for a week at the end of this month. Such hunters would also have their membership revoked since, by their actions, they would be endangering the future of traditional spring hunting for many thousands of other hunters and trappers, the federation said.
Applications for the special licences opened this morning at Maltapost branch offices, but all was quiet and the hunters appeared to be obeying the directive.
The FKNK said the opening of a spring hunting season of just one week was 'obscene' and accepting it would set a precedent for the future.
In its statement this morning, the FKNK described the Prime Minister as being intransigent after he declared in Dubai yesterday that there were no grounds to extend this year's spring hunting season.
The FKNK last Friday had urged the government to reconsider its decision.
The FKNK said it would continue to struggle through every legal means to ensure that hunters and trappers were able to enjoy their rights, despite having been betrayed through false promises.
The federation said that the governemnt was committing an injustice is denying Maltese hunters the same rights enjoyed by over seven million hunters and trappers in Europe. This was an injustice which would never be forgotten.
The federation reiterated its directives to hunters not to apply for the special licence to hunt at the end of this month.

Dr Gonzi has just handed out the rope with which the hunting lobby is going to hang itself. I look forward to the day.

Is it even legal to revoke membership just for doing something that is legal?

Good work FKNK....this shows how much you really love your so called hobby.....you are prepared to name and shame those who apply licences and yet you are not known to name and shame those who break the law and hunt these lovely islands....SHAME ON YOU FKNK......
If this is the spirit in which you want us to in believe your right for hunting then we have no other way but to ask the PM to keep the season closed.......by the way I am neither a hunter nor a member of Birdlife but an honest citizen who believes in the protection of wildlife.

FKNK will name and shame hunters who applied for the special licence. Pity it never seems to have named and shamed any hunter who killed protected birds.

A very good decision by the FKNK to shame all hunters who apply for the special licence,& revoke their membership. Before the referendum to join EU we were promised the continuity of spring hunting & trapping, besides a lot of other things. I and thousands of others were misinformed with a lot of LIES & unfortunately we voted YES to EU. Nobody is going to TRUST this goverment again. The worst is, we celebrate INDIPENDENCE DAY when we have an elected DICTATORSHIP. Last & not least PN can forget all my 5 family votes for EVER. SAHHA LEJNKHOM. I urge all hunters & trappers to back up all FKNK directives. UNITED WE STAND ................ Divided we Fall.

"The federation reiterated its directives to hunters not to apply for the special licence to hunt at the end of this month."
Excellent news, primarily for the birds, but equally so for the overwhelming majority of the people who may now continue to enjoy the countryside in safety and without hindrance.
I suggest that FKNK now extends its name and shame directive to all hunters when the autumn bird killing season comes up for review that we may all once again see and enjoy the return of free flying birds to our skies.

Wishful thinking Michael A Vella - keep on dreaming!!!! The autumn season will not come up for review - it is there to be enjoyed! While in the countryside, please ensure that you do not trespass onto private property. Hunting or not, you are barred from entering! Sir, I assure you that the FKNK, the other Hunting Associations, hunters, their families and many others who champion their cause will not relent until the Maltese hunters get what is rightfully theirs!

I am glad FKNK is finally showing its true face even to its members. It should have named and shamed all the hunters that by their irresponsible actions have brought the hobby to the current situation.
If on the other hand, as it always says, it has no knowledge of such happenings and the people perpetrating such illegalities how can it guarantee government that it will be able to discipline hunters and make then act by the law?

What about Naming and Shaming FKNK members who break the laws actually in place with regards to bird hunting in Spring time?
I personally HATE name and shame strategies but this call by FKNK on this occasion on something which is up to hunters to decide about shows their direction in political terms.

While I'm not in a position to determine if the hunting season is appropriate or not I think FKNK should be ashamed of using such tactics to control hunters.
This is a free country and everybody should be allowed to do what he feels and thinks. If there are hunters who think that the government offer is good then they should be left to apply.

Well done FKNK we are all behind you. Yes your duty now is to name and shame the betrayers. Let no one forget that before the EU referendum and the 2003 general election we were promised in writing under the Office of the Prime Minister letter head and signed by the then Prime Minister a full spring hunting season and not just 6 half days. We were betrayed and every one should know it. The bluff about the turtle dove breeding or not breeding should stop now or was the turtle dove not breeding before the 2003 referendum and general election. Please speak up Dr. Gonzi.

This is disgusting. That a federation should turn against and threaten its own members like this. FKNK should have named and shamed all the hunters that have poached, killed protected birds, and shot close to roads bring about the general distrust of the public on hunters. The unfortunate thing is that even law abiding hunters are being made to suffer the consequences of FKNK's incompetence. I am against hunting personally, but I would never think of not allowing anyone to practice it in a lawful manner. We are a democracy after all. Some of us are anyway.
