Two escape injury in Regional Road crash
Two young men were lucky to escape injury this afternoon when their car crashed onto the centre strip, uprooting a number of trees, before crashing into an electricity pole on the Regional Road, Swieqi.
The vehicle was extensively damaged.

Honda S-2000 are very delicate cars you do not need to be going over the limit to lose control. I have one of them and from my experience if you are unlucky you will lose control plus the tarmac on the roads does not help. Thankfully the drivers where not hurt but i bet you they were shocked !
One more note how did they get insurance ? To get mine and I am over 25 it was a mini nightmare and I always had sport cars without one claim.

I was not present for this accident so I cannot pass any comments in favour or against what happenned. HOWEVER, about twenty minutes later I was driving out of Pembroke going towards St Andrews. As soon as I was halfway out, a very careful driver (driving a Green Range Rover) decided to overtake about twenty cars that had stopped on the traffic light (as it was Red) and he decided to go completely on the wrong side of the road and centre strip and came straight at me. If I was not fully focused on my careful driving, I wouldn't be here saying what happenned. Believe me it was horrific.
I think that this is the reason why accidents happen. Yes we can blame the roads (and a lot of these roads need redoing) BUT it is IGNORANT, SELFISH and ARROGANT drivers like these that need to be seen to.

There is no equivalent powered toyota sportscar that is a convertible. You are probably dreaming.
You even state above 80kph you have not grip etc... Are you serious? Did you check your tyres lately?
I think the comments here are a bit superfluous.
Excessive speed leads to accidents. The honda must have been going at exceissive speed and a combination of either inexperienced driver or a mishap caused the crash.
Any rear wheel drive car has to be driven with attention. The roads we have dont help neither.

What about the Toyota MRS??
S. Calleja
Apr 13th 2010, 14:45
Standard versions of the MRS develop 138bhp. The S2000 on the other hand develops between 237bhp and 239bhp, depending on the variant and year of manufacture.

A general question:
Why on earth do Maltese always feel the need to:
A) Judge
B)Patronise
C)Speculate and Jump to Conclusions
D)Comment on everything in general, speaking in a manner that suggests that they 'know exactly what they're talking about
???
I wonder if this is inherent of Maltese Culture.
PS I wish a quick recovery to the youngsters, the trees and the car...

I have an equivalent powered Toyota sports car and even with brand new tyres, any speed over 80km per h and you have NO FRICTION and NO GRIP on Maltese tarmac. if you do exceed that speed, you ask for it. That car must have been doing over 150 to uproot 4 trees! this is no accident but VOLUNTARY RISK! wil this go unpunished too...???

@Steve Mizzi
No. I'm no expert but one who, through my 30 years driving experience, can come to some conclusion. Can you suggest the root cause as to why they 'lost control' of the car? Because if the driver just lost control, then s/he must have a driving disorder and should be banned from driving!!!
@Deo Catania
I cannot comment on the Vitz accident. But any car, if driven over the top in the wrong place can just as well be fatal. Just to give you an example drive the vitz against a tree at full speed.
@all
For sure there are signs of 60 and 50 Km/h (which is the maximum one should drive)
Where the cars involved travelling at the maximum speed?
I drive from that stretch of road every day and if one is to drive according to the highway code, no one crashes. I see cars speeding down the stretch of road. So stop blaming the pot holes, the authorities, the weather, the road conditions and a thousand excuses. Just go in front of the mirror and ask yourself if you have to blame (not for this particular incident) for not abiding to the laws.

@deo catania,
why do we have to keep blaming the roads and the trees? what about mobile phones, high speeding, driving with one hand out of the window,overtaking on bends, wrong lanes, and you can go on forever, just excuses, one should drive to the conditions of the roads and take more care instead of showing off, and yes i forgot, leave early for your destination instead of last minute and then drive like a maniac!

What impressed me most was the PBS news report that the driver had seen a car approaching at high speed and lost control of his vehicle; how does one uproot a tree that size (or several, as the case may be) if one is driving at 70 kph? We are talking about a light car for heaven's sake not a train or an aircraft carrier where momentum+mass is unstoppable.
With 300,000 cars on the roads (some being handled quite irresponsibly by inexperienced drivers) Malta has become extremely dangerous. How long ago was it that two elderly people were killed at Erbgha Mwiezep roundabout?

Dear Deo, no wonder a Vitz lost control..... open your eyes and see the hundreds of boy racers with modified noisy Vitz cars polluting our roads and showing off. Your argument that the accidents you mention happened because of the bad road is useless and false. I live in the vicinity and I can hear the pseudo-macho boy racers revving hard and overspeeding ruthlessly 24 hours a day on that stretch of "bad" road, with ALL types of cars. You state that "some days ago another Vitz lost control" almost in the same spot. Do you realise that "in some days" time, many thousands of cars pass from that spot? So how come that only a few of those thousands have an accident there if the road is bad? Isn't the road the same for everyone? Open your eyes and admit it once for all. ITS THE DRIVER AND NOT THE ROAD.

The so called Vitz you mentioned, 80% of those are automatic with an engine of 10..They all have a stupid silencer just for the sake of the noice. And mind you, every car exceeds the Maltese speed limits, so why dont we ban all the cars??

the important thing is that they escape injury! and no other people were hurt @ a.camilleri what a shame caring about the damage on the trees and other damages they caused, after this excident

@Anthony Debono. Some days ago on a public holiday a Vitz lost control almost in the same spot, not to mention endless other accidents that occured there. Now if for you a Vitz is considered a sports car you really have problems. just another patpitu.
@A Camilleri. it applies here too, but not the other way round, whenever we damage our cars because of bad roads WE have to pay and not the government/local councills.

The fact that that road is slippery is glaringly evident. It is a fact and accept it. As should the authorites, who in turn should do something about it. That is lay a new decent wearing layer.
Newton's Laws exist and there is nothing either you or I or anybody else for that matter can do about them.
Your assumption that they were speeding is just that. An assumption.

hope they are made to pay for the damage to the trees and other damages they caused.
i dont know if this applies in malta, but it surley does in the uk and maybe other countries.

........and in another article some closed minds said that heavy vehicles should not be used on Sundays!!! see what we have in our streets... high speed cars and motorcycles!!! better ban the velocity of such vehicles... when the maximum speed in Malta is 80km and these cars reach that limit within a couple of seconds!!

How about driving a motorised wheelchair than?
Anton Farrugia
Apr 13th 2010, 09:05
I'm sure someone off this website would puplically speak out against the dangers of motorised wheelchairs and demand the government take action on the matter by only allowing un-motorised wheel chairs.

Lost control of their car my left toe!
Just have a look at what car they were in - that's just an indication.

Since you so "expertly" excluded loss of control, are you suggesting that they intentionally drove into the trees?
Joe Mifsud
Apr 12th 2010, 13:33
Lol... I'm quite sure they lost control... (due to whatever reason, I guess you are insinuating speeding).... or do you mean that the car is such a piece of junk that they wanted to get rid of it? haha
