Colonel John Cachia, the controversial former Police Commissioner and commander of the Task Force, has died aged 92.

Col Cachia was Commissioner of Police between 1977 and 1980.

On April 1, 1980 he was appointed the first commander of the Task Force, a unit composed of officers and men from the AFM and the police, which included an Infantry Company, a Maritime Squadron and a Helicopter Flight.

Controversially in early 1987, Col Cachia entered the Chamber of Parliament to protest at then Opposition Leader Eddie Fenech Adami while he was making a speech in the wake of the Tal-Barrani incidents. A breach of privilege complaint was immediately raised, but no action was ever taken.

Col Cachia retired with the change of government in 1987.
