St Francis Secondary School recently held its Science and Global Awareness Day, which focused on climate change. The thematic approach adopted by the school brought together the science subjects as well as Geography, History and the work being done in Ekoskola. The theme was tackled from two main perspectives: how to reduce climate change by minimising litter; and saving energy in the house.
Students were encouraged to think of models with the environment as a major priority. The models on display were made entirely from recycled material.
Different models of solar water heaters, wind turbines and modern intelligent lighting systems were among the projects made.
Other activities included demonstrations by students to highlight scientific principles of refraction, harmonics, surface tension, astronomy and effects of pressure changes. Models of cars built from various materials were also used in a race.
The fair provided room for students from different colleges to get together and discuss their research. Guest students from Stella Maris college, Gżira, shared the results of the scientific research they carried out at Msida Marina.
The boys from St Albert, Valletta, shared their knowledge about evolution and played an interactive game about Charles Darwin.
Parents also participated in the event. Besides having the chance to support the work of their children and learn from the projects, parents attended a workshop by engineer Charles Yousif, receiving useful tips on what to look for when buying and setting an efficient solar water heater for the house.
