A billboard in Marsa promoting the papal visit was vandalised overnight, with unknown persons adding a Hitler moustache to the image of Pope Benedict.

The Pope, who is due to start a short visit to Malta today week, is German and in his youth was conscripted into the German forces in the closing stages of the war.

The police said they had also received reports of vandalism on billboards in Bahar ic-Caghaq and the Birkirkara Bypass.

Yesterday, two papal visit billboards in Marsa got the unlikely addition of two stencilled images of what looked like a panda. It was not clear why the “artist” in question juxtaposed the bears with the Pope.
