A man from Mellieħa was charged with setting off a home-made bomb in an abandoned building next to Gianpula fields in Rabat.
David Cortis, 42, pleaded not guilty to setting off an improvised explosive device that might have caused serious damage and to illegally storing explosives on Tuesday.
He also pleaded not guilty to being in possession of a weapon without a licence.
Mr Cortis was also charged with relapsing. Magistrate Miriam Hayman refused bail and remanded him in custody.
Police Inspectors Chris Pullicino and Robert Vella prosecuted.
Lawyer Patrick Valentino appeared for Mr Cortis.
